Having spotted a screw through the middle of a front tyre on the 3.2, I took it off to put on the spare, and was horrified to find a half inch deep lake in the wheel well. Has anyone any idea where this could have got in? I can find no sign of water ingress anywhere.

Happens all the time on mine, I've tried all sorts to find it but never succeeded.

Mate with an old large 7 series beemer has a similar problem and he thinks it is condensation as the cabin air vents into the boot area before escaping and the wing is thin metal with no insulation at that point, so is always cold in the winter.

Now I know that the cabin air vents into the boot on the RIGHT side of the Omega, as that's where the external vent is, does it also vent on the left side of the rear seat and  so cause the problem

Hmmm, I must say I did consider condensation, and as my AC has been out for a while, this may be the cause.

Has your aircon always worked ?? I "think" the problem has only occurred since the air con went fubar  ..

It's been a mixture, the 3.2's aircon was broke for a year. Never came across it.

The 2.2's aircon was broke for about 5 years, also never had a problem.

Always dry as a bone in spare wheel well. 

As I ways keep a load of spares in there, spare hayes book, leads, blanket, fuses, snow chains (in winter) - As I turn the wheel so it faces in so to speak, so you get loads of storage space

Isn't there a rubber bung in there somewhere? Can't remember for sure.

After the idiot up the road left his hand brake off, (you guess the rest ), i had the boot lid straightened out. Since then i have had slight water ingress so just drilled a 6mm hole in the bung at the bottom of the well. Seems ok when i check it every now and again.

Had this on the explod - think theres a leaky seal between two panels.

There is a drain bung in the bottom with three small holes on it, which someone had helpfully sealanted in place on Zeke - cleaned it all out and scraped the holes clean and now stays dry after a jetwash, which is good

Down the rear of the wheel arch... 1/2" tube iirc

If its a saloon pull the carpet from around the rear shock turret, they rot there and the water will run down into the spare wheel well. Worth a look even if no water as they rot and cannot be seen unless carpet removed.

Never had a problem in my 2.6, had a Ford a few years back which had similar problems think it was a Granada but there was a rubber bung in the wheelwell, just removed that  problem solved.
