To be fair it's quite a nice car to drive.

It has an impressive amount of low down torque but in line with every diesel car I've driven it runs out of revs just when it should be 'coming on cam'

Bit like sex without a climax really. ::)

Range not so good either diesels have better range as well  :D

I've just looked at the specification.

300 BHP and a faintly ridiculous 516 lb ft of twist :o :o :o

I thought it felt quite nippy.

.......my XFR has only 461 lb ft of torque. :-\.........but 503 BHP. :y :y

It really doesn’t matter how many bhp’s or torques it has, there is nowhere to use them in this country. My 2.0 derv astra is as fast as I could possibly need. Did a naughty overtake today on a 60mph single carriageway and was doing 90 before I knew it. The motorways are full of 50mph speed limits and variable speed limits and stupid, ignorant drivers. You just can’t do any more than 90-95 without seriously threatening your existence.
To use Lord Opti’s parlance, it’s no good having a 15 inch dick when all the women have 12 inch fannies. The extra 3 inches are just no use.  ;D


Apart from that, having a swanky, luxurious car is very nice and I would love a jag. But all this old school top trumps attitude might be good down the pub, or on a car forum, but is useless in real life.


And it’s days are definitely numbered  ::)

I know scouse girls are prone to loose knicker elastic when they've downed a few trebles during happy hour.......but even so. :D ;)

Exactly, Jimmy. My derv is not good from the lights, it changes gear three times before I hit 30. But from then on it has oodles of grunt, even when the revs are low.

In all honesty I couldn't put that car anywhere near its limits on a regular B road and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

I had her well into three figures, don't get me wrong. But unless all these pistonheads frequenters have much greater skills than I, there are some mighty Keyboard warriors out there.

Sure, you can blat it flat out down the slip road, or away from a roundabout, but that hardly requires much dexterity does it?

The problem is it's not really a lot of fun at that kind of pace, I'd much rather have a GT86/mx5/mk1 boxster and actually be able to explore the limits of the cars performance

Until I was 50, I laughed in the face of that kind of talk. Now it makes perfect sense. Its probably because I'm getting old, but its the reason I gave up riding motorbikes. A short but objective talk with myself showed I couldn't justify it any more for all the reasons you mention.
Plus needing a licence to commute became essential for the first time in 30 years.
Oh for the days of yore, when roads were often empty and getting chased by the cops was a sport for both participants.  :'(   ;D

I agree with you there, you just can`t exploit it on B roads (My 370z is roughly the same performance wise), clit Sports and the like will run rings round them.

I have had some very good runs on some decent A roads though, particularly the A166 from York to Driffield where you can use the overtaking abilities that the MX5 and GT86 just don`t have. The only problems with roads like that is that they are popular with the bikers which in turn brings unmarked plod cars.

Yes same derivative as mine (all be it the S version with go faster bling).

Jag do seem very good at giving out tempting courtesy cars, they also have by far the best and most friendly dealerships (way above the BMW/Merc/Audi ones in my experience)

Cars designed for girlies to drive to the hairdresser, or the gay man to drive to the gym. ::)

The Datsun 370Z  that Mr Gav owns is more of a proper old-fashioned sports car similar to the Healey 3000 with a nice straight six up front.

You've made a good choice as the new XF is a proper drivers car ( with the appropriate engine) ::)

The old XF seems more cumbersome in comparison with far more scuttle and bonnet in front of the driver. The new XF seems the smaller car yet it has more space, especially in the rear.

The Zaf is a has reasonable go, like yours to get moving bit sluggish but once rolling it ain't bad being 2.0 diesel as well.

Coming out of 50mph section, drop it down a few and it's at 90 quite swiftly.

But, what I miss that the 3.2 has is effortless power, the ease at which is pulls away without getting in a sweat. So the power does not need to give outright speed :)

I've just located the Ad Blue filler cap in the boot. How often am I required to piss in the Ad Blue tank? :)

Don't know but it's expensive piss!  :-\

I was with my mate the other day in his Disco 4 and the AdBlue message popped up, so we bought a big bottle (2ltrs) for a tenner and chucked it in.  The light didn't go out, so the AdBlue tank must be a biggun and I don't think you'll need to worry about it on your loaner.  ;)

Somebody on the Nissan forum said it was a analogue car in a digital age in a discussion comparing it with the new M4`s and Audi`s like the TT RS and RS4`s due to the lack of gadgets, which I find is part of the charm.

He was done!

AdBlue is circa £10-12 per 10 litres (and less in many places), they consume around 1litre per 500+ miles

The dealer will sort it for you 'me-lord'. plus you get three levels of warning before it refuses to re-start....then it needs at least 3-4 litres to clear it.

Well yes, but we bought it at a petrol station in Uig on the Isle of Skye.  ::)

I guess it usually gets topped up at service and as neither of us had any experience of AdBlue, we thought it best to bung some in as the Disco is fairly new.  ;)

That's the key thing for me.

I must be getting old, as I haven't even attempted to max the Shaguar out, suspect it has a limiter anyway.

But its that effortless (and reasonably prompt) getting to desired speed that makes me like more powerful engines.

I went for the ZX10 due to effortless power - want to overtake, don't bother dropping it a load of pegs.  Actually, I never attempted to max that either.  Or the Omegas.  They are all just too quick to max on UK roads safely, as current drivers (as all bikers will know) have no concept of anyone approaching at speed...    ...added to the VAG mentality of pulling into the outside lane without looking, as as long as they indicate, that's fine  >:(

I've just located the Ad Blue filler cap in the boot. How often am I required to piss in the Ad Blue tank? :)

Don't know but it's expensive piss!  :-\

I was with my mate the other day in his Disco 4 and the AdBlue message popped up, so we bought a big bottle (2ltrs) for a tenner and chucked it in.  The light didn't go out, so the AdBlue tank must be a biggun and I don't think you'll need to worry about it on your loaner.  ;)

Ad-blue is now synthetic, lots of lorryist's carry 10L drums ( ask might sell you some) or go to the truck pumps, ad-blue pumps now, bit cheaper than the little drums/bottles they sell in the fore-court.

Agreed! The Volvo doesn't have this and it (along with a slush box) would make commuting a whole lot more enjoyable. There are a number of low mileage 3.2 vectra elites at or below the £1k mark which look tempting for an lpg kit  :-X

I think the trade of between ‘effortless power’ and mpg is not one I’d be prepared to pay. The economic price of having the smooth acceleration under my right foot, should I need it, would be to double my fuel bills.
I’ll put up with noisy, clattery power for the sake of my wallet.

Work has been busier recently, so when going home I far preferred an auto. As just pop it in D and just go, no matter what the traffic just easily and quickly pull away. No need for fast gear changes manual style!

I drove 3.2 yesterday and pulled away from lights with ease and just kept pulling, seriously considering LPGing it now.

Just returned from Mainhattan (Frankfurt) to Lahr. South of Karlsruhe the A5 was clear, free and unlimited  :y

The old 4 pot lady did 130 mph.  :D

Seriously though, now I the Zaf, LPG on 3.2 is an option.

But, time is the issue. I could take it to a garage and leave it to be done, but we know that's not a good idea. Given family I need to support, I cannot go off for 2 weekends, probably 3 to do the work.  :(

It's a struggle to just find half a day.  :'(

the key to getting effortless power and decent mpg is to downsize the car, but not the engine.
