On this date 80yrs ago an icon called the Supermarine Spitfire first took to the air.A design so "right" from the off and powered in the main by that most iconic of piston aero engines the Merlin.Sadly its creator Mitchell did not live to see the contribution his brainchild made in the upcoming war nor the lasting legacy it continues to make.

John Sergeant made a terrific programme about the Spitfire a while back singing its praises - a true pilot's plane, he said. I wish I had recorded the programme.....

Amazing to think that over 20 thousand were built and only a handful are flying today.

Always brings a tear to my eye when one of the old girls goes over.

Under-steer is when the front of the car hits the wall, and over-steer is when the rear of the car hits the wall.
Power is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how much of the wall you take with you.
