Electrical issue
« on: 14 October 2017, 18:51:17 »

Hi, got a weird issue with my V6...driving along the revs wouldn't settle at idle, then dash lights dimmed then all the warning lights started coming up then it died......after battery was dead. Called for recovery they came out and its started again..tested the alternator and was giving over 13volts. Had it recovered to home, went down it started then I put the lights on and all the warning lights came up, msg on the display said fld vision something went off too quick. then died. So I'm at a loss where to look. All terminals are clean and connected tightly.

Nearside, bottom off the engine, near the front corner of the sump and A/C/compressor. Runs across to the chassis from there.

Alternator bearings failing would be my guess, cure is to change the alternator.

Alternator bearings failing would be my guess, cure is to change the alternator replace the bearings.

Fixed that for you  ;)

Could be the alternator bearings (although that's a fair way down the list for me), could be the brushes in the regulator, could be a bad connection either at the battery (terminal crimps have a habit of failing) or one of the many earth straps.

There's a really good guide in the maintenance section for checking the charging system.

Similar symptoms for me a couple of months back caused by alternator regulator.

I got a replacement from unit exchange in borehamwood for about £35. Not the cheapest advertised but theyre only 1/2 hour away and I needed it asap.
They took a new reg off a stock alternator for me.

Got the car started. Put a voltmeter across and got 11.84 volts. so looks like the alternator bit the dust.....but still cant find the earth strap. Looked all around the a/c side and the alternator side. Does anyone have a picture or diagram? Thanks

Quite right, that is a starter motor. I wonder why it is being sold as an alternator.
