you might need to take all of the lifters out, clean them out and check that they are serviceable

 

And taking off the rocker cover will give you an idea what condition its in ... sludge and carbon deposits will tell you its not been serviced regularly

Thanks for all of the advice, I bought this to replace my 2.2sport which runs great but needs an exhaust, they are just not worth spending money on but what great cars when they are running well!

I'm not using it at the moment as the 2.2 is mot,d till June, I had hoped that the oil change and a good run around the block would shut it up but alas no, so it looks like I need to get the covers off and have a look  hey ho!!

I need to summon up some enthusiasm

They take a lot more driving than that to quieten down, even if they're just noisy from a rebuild. Minimum 20 minutes driving, and it may take a couple of thousand miles with regular short oil changes, as said.

If the noise is really bad I'd be ALSO checking exhaust manifold leak and the timing. Timing out can cause loud clatter. I've experienced that on my old breaker
