Vauxhall Omega 2.5TD Water Temperature Sensor
« on: 06 May 2017, 13:08:20 »

Hi Guys

Can anyone out there help me, I'm trying to find somewhere I can purchase a water gauge temperature sensor for the Omega 2.5TD, it's the part which screws into the cylinder head.
Vauxhall's part number for it is 90510660, unfortunately they no longer stock this item.

I'm after a new one rather than a used one, I've tried searching on the internet but haven't found anywhere in the UK which has one in stock, obviously not all places appear  on search results.

I've even thought about purchasing from abroad but the language barrier is a bit of a pain.

Does anyone know where I can buy a new one of these items from in the UK or abroad if they have dealt with companies and had no issues in doing so.

Cheers

Clive

Could be a good chance its actually be a BMW part, if so, opens up and widens your search.

Or try Landrover, as it was also fitted to P51 Range Rovers.

Hi Guys

Thank you both for your replies they are much appreciated, I'm uncertain if the same sensor is used on the Rover P38, if it is I'm assuming it's not under the same part number and unless it can be cross referenced life can become difficult.

It seems one sensor is easier to get hold of than the other, but for the benefit of anyone else who reads this post, this is what I’ve found out so far.

I contacted a Vauxhall main agent who informed me the part I needed was no longer serviced by them, but they did give me some part numbers for it, 90510660 and also the Opel equivalent number 1338459.

There are two water temperature sensors, the one nearest the bulkhead which is green in colour, I think is to do with the ecu but I’m not 100% sure, no doubt someone can correct this if I’m wrong, it has two blade connectors in it and the Vauxhall part number for it is 90487859.

The other which is nearest the radiator is black or dark grey in colour and only has one blade connector, this is the one which controls the water temperature gauge (90510660).

In trying to search for the sender by using the part number, I haven’t had much luck, apart from one website which was partially down at the time, www.vauxhall-car-parts.co.uk a bit pricey at £38.95 but I guess this is what happens when parts become more difficult to obtain.

In the meantime I found another website which is where I’ve ordered it from, www.online-teile.com it’s based in Germany and the cost was £38.64 including vat, shipping and currency exchange through PayPal, so not much difference in the prices.

I’ll update this post just to let the forum know how I get on regarding delivery as I have never dealt with this company before, plus purchasing from abroad.

I’ve also included a few photos with measurements of both the ecu and water gauge senders as it maybe of use to someone else with the same issue. http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x401/skyhawk2000/P1210435.jpg

The twin connector one is indeed the ECU Coolant Temp sensor, single connector one is for dash gauge.

Can't remember which way round they are fitted though. Not that it matters, if the loom reaches.

Sorry, no more ideas where to get the parts.  I did have spares at one point, but obviously now lost over time (and explosions etc ;D)

Hi TheBoy

I knew someone could put me right on the two bladed sender.

Just for anyone else reading this, the latest update regarding the water gauge sender, as already mentioned I ordered it from www.online-teile.com based in Germany, didn't I get an e-mail the very next day saying they no longer had that part in stock and credited my payment card  :(.

I have now placed the order with www.vauxhall-car-parts.co.uk and so far received a message saying the order is being processed, which was four days ago.
There seems to be an awful lot of sellers out there advising items which they don't have in stock and it's only after someone orders the part that they find they can't get it, to me that's a real pain in the backside.

I have a gut feeling I shall be fitting a used one, that's if I'm lucky enough to find a second hand one, but for now I'll see what transpires regarding the order for the new one.

Watch this space!!

There's quiet a few on the Bay ranging from 10- 25 quid, if you search BMW P38 Series 325 or 525 TD.

You could try Andrew Page with the part number, they seem to have good cross referencing guides. :y

Update on the sensor

The one I placed on order with www.vauxhall-car-parts.co.uk met the same fate turns out they couldn't get one, it is now no longer listed on their website.

Anyway at the risk of showing myself up  :-[, I tested the whole thing again.

I took the sensor out of the cylinder head, disconnected the cable which connects onto it, got two jumper leads, connected one between the cable I had just pulled off the sensor and the sensor itself, so I'd got enough length of cable to allow me to dangle the sensor in some hot water.
Connect the second jumper lead between the sensor body and grounded the other end of it.

Dangled the sensor in a cup of very hot water, Verdict, didn't the temperature gauge start to move, tried it a few times and yes every time I did it the gauge moved.
Don't you just hate problems like that.
I had previously tested the sensor on it's own with a multi-meter and cup of hot water and I did get different resistance readings as the water cooled down, but I didn't know what parameters the sensor was supposed to work within, so assumed it wasn't working correctly.

I was thinking where the heck do I go from here, then a light bulb came on, no not in the car the one in my head.

I disconnected the jumper between the sensor and the cable which pushes onto it, did a continuity test between the cable and the car ground and sure enough I got continuity.
It wasn't until I waggled the cable about a bit did I not get continuity, bingo a darn broken wire which was making and breaking, I soldered a new section of wire in and at last the water temperature gauge is working again  :y.

So I didn't need a replacement sensor after all, but I don't think I would have had any luck trying to track down a new one
I even tried  www.brit-car.co.uk an independent Land Rover parts specialists, same answer, no joy.

Thanks again fellas for taking the time to offer your suggestions, all of them were greatly appreciated and I hope my little saga will come in useful for anyone else with similar issues.

Cheers
