I need to drill a couple of 125mm holes thru the outside wall. I can see a load of different ones on ebay etc but no idea what is the best. Anybody used one or recommend one. Cheers

Got a decent size  sds drill to power it thru is probably more important.

This was (basically) my approach. Bought a cheap one and then threw it away after I was done

How thick is the wall?  I am guessing a course of bricks a gap and a course of bricks.  So you need bits that are long enough. Too long and they are unwieldy. I have a set of four from Lidl that are long enough to go through our two foot thick walls.

125 mm is about five inches. I havent seen drill bits that big for brick walls. You can buy a device for cutting large circular holes in plasterboard, ply and the like. Might be something for bricks.

In their absence i would use a small drill to make a central pilot hole having made sure no cabling or pipes. Then make a ring of say 15mm drill holes and knock out with a chisel. Wont be too much making good to do afterwards

A word of warning. I drilled an archway in a stone wall using a one inch drill bit standing on a ladder. It got stuck just the once. The drill rotated and hit me on the top of my head knocking me off the ladder. So much blood !

Dry cut core drill is what you need Paul .  Toolstop do a set with the largest being 127mm, it also includes the extension section which you will need if you are drilling a wall thicker than 160mm ish.
Around £120 as I remember.

For a one off job  . . .  hire is the way to go IMO.

You say no hire shop near you  . . .

Have you moved to the deep countryside or the moors  then ?

As Al says you need a decent wet or dry Diamond Core Drill bit, not cheap for that size, and a decent Hammer Drill, tbh by the time youve bought the stuff and the Arbor attachments, Pilot hole drill bit etc, youve done your dough, defo Hire Shop if its a one off, or just get a quote to have the work done could be cheeper in the long run and saves all the hag, theres plenty of Gas and Boiler fitters that carry that stuff around, beer tokens on a Sunday morning and all that..

Havent seen one of those dry cut core drill before. Better than my suggestion.

Yowser! That sounds really nasty! Thankfully the big sds I bought has a pretty good clutch in it, or I'd have doubtless broken my wrist at least once. Mine was the Titan 5kg one that screwfix sell, lasted 2.5yrs of very heavy DIY use. Used it for everything, drilling, chiselling and mixing board/tile adhesive. Great bit of kit for under £50.

I grabbed one of these when I was doing the Mother-in-Law's bathroom... Been really impressed with it as it took some real abuse chiselling off the tiles and plaster. 14 hours virtually non stop!

I have one of those screwfix drills. I looked at hiring the stuff before and it worked out cheeper to buy the sds drill and 1000mm dewalt drill bit. Nearest hire shop is taunton 20 odd miles along a roads. Iam only cutting 3 holes. 1 for the dryer and 2 for aircon units.
