For which OS? (IIRC you were trialling Linux recently - gparted should work just fine there and it's installed by default in most distros)

Sorry, i omitted it is Win7
Not got around to using Linux properly, just to extract files from non-booting PC to my limited space laptop. I have extra space on the laptop D drive which was FAT 32 & converted to NTFS, but i have to move its unallocated space before i can use it for the C drive. I hope that makes sense.

Windows can do it itself (certainly Pro, would need to check Home)

Back up D:
Delete D:
Extended C: from the inbuilt disk management tool
Recreate D if required (who is daft enough in this day and age to split a drive?)
Restore files

The reason I have not tried this is that the D drive volume is ACERDATA. I have backed these files up externally however, so is it OK to put them in the C drive, then delete the D.

If it's running the 32 bit versions of WinXP or Win7 then upgrading to 2GB memory is probably cheap and worth it. No point in going above 4GB though - that's the theoretical maximum for 32 bit Windows, and in reality you probably can't use more than about 3GB because much of the memory above 3GB is reserved for system use - BIOS and graphics usually.

This laptop (DELL Vostro 1720 Core2 Duo running Win7Pro-32) has 4GB installed, but only 2.96GB is useable according to the control panel.

Win7 64 bit and just doubled RAM to 2gb.   

For 64bit, I would normally recommend more than 4Gb. 64bit is less efficient with memory than 32 bit.

General rule of thumb:
32bit - 2Gb-3.5Gb
64bit - > 6Gb

3.5 - 6Gb is no mans land really.

Linux is unsuitable for the uses this laptop gets put to.

And besides, if I wanted to use a US keyboard, I have a perfectly good UK spec MacBook Pro in a drawer somewhere in the house.

my antique xp car diagnostics laptop has just sh*t it's pot full 
just after I ordered memory sticks and brand new ye olde pata 60 gig hard drive 
got a HP mini 210 on windows 7 (which will do) ,so I will have to transfer all the software
just had to order more ram for that as it's only 1 gig

Small numbers (1-3) of stuck or dead pixels are a characteristic of LCD screens. These are normal and should not be considered a defect.

Last time I saw a PATA drive was last year. In my Jag

I have an HP Mini somewhere, but bumped up to 2Gb, and an SSD to make it almost usable.  But the screen resolution is a problem, its something like 1024x600. Basically too low.

I have a (really crap, ill conceived) Acer tablet that has exactly the opposite issue - the screen is too small but resolution is too high, something like 1080x1920 on a 7" display .  Not even Specsavers could help there .

I'm not fussed about the screen resolution, it's not for internet use just obd2 diagnostics ,tis,epc,tolerancedata etc
you can plug in an external screen if needed
I got 2 GB of ddr3 ordered £4 (that is the max it will take apparently)
don't think it's worth installing an SSD, other than booting faster(which is not an issue) all the software is simple

very surprised that a newish Jag would have a PATA drive

I transferred the ACERDATA to C drive and did as Jaime suggested and deleted the D drive. Result, so now have sufficient space to tinker with while trying to rescue the PC. Having copied everything off the PC to an external drive, I attempted to upgrade to Win 10, but it won’t accept the Win 7 code, so I guess that route is finished.
