I did a pencil rubbing and just light surface marks, hardly notice. Mainly around the water holes at the top of the head in the pictures above, you can see they are darker, they look like rust blemishes from the gasket(hope that makes sense).

R before the part number is a VX exchange number.

Car has previously had a head replacement.  ;)

That might explain why some of the head bolts, didn't seem hard to undo(maybe one of the reasons the gasket went?). Also all the other bolts from exhaust and intake came out easy.

Part Numbers on the casings mean nothing at all they are just used as ref numbers by GM. Those numbers will not be found on EPC. Only way to check if a second hand head will fit your car is to cross ref both vehicle VINs

What's the height of the head you have? Factory spec is 134mm for X20XEV head. So if it's measurably less than that then it's been skimmed at least once regardless of where it came from, factory original or a replacement.

so if the pitting is minimal, a light DIY surface finish (head and block ) sounds like a good way to go,rather than run the risk of a deep shave on a milling machine ,because they are lazy and will not clamp it accurately to take off 2 thou or less ,
money would be better spent on a better head gasket set,new head bolts, rather than cheapest you could find
but it's your engine, so your choice
an opportunity to check/de-glaze the bores ,give the cooling system a good flush etc etc

Never skimmed then. Since it's flat with no deep corrosion you could clean it up as per 'dave the builder's' advice above and put it back on. New bolts and studs.

I have a perfect Z22XE engine sitting on a pallet with only 80k on it , was supplied new by VX a few years ago, may be easier than changing the head

i would always skim an aluminum head as then can warp slightly when removing the head bolts.
