Sports cars . . . .
« on: 13 July 2014, 18:03:49 »

In my decades of driving, I've never had a sports car of any kind. Always been a bit too sensible, (hang on, is my MV6 "sensible" ?).

Anyway, this is an itch that I may watch to scratch. Not interested and can't afford some super car. My ideal would maybe be a classic TR4, 5 or 6 but they are now expensive collectors items. The sensible choice would probably be a Mazda MX5, but they just seem a bit dull and uninteresting.

However a Chrysler Crossfire ? Ugly, fast, affordable, certainly interesting. But spares could be a problem. I have no idea about reliability. But I just kinda fancy one  ::) One oddity is that I read somewhere that the front and rear wheels are different sizes.

Any comments ? What else should be on my radar ? A Merc SL would be nice, but for my budget it would be quite an old one with associated potential repair costs  :(

I'm not about to splash out right now, just sort of looking around in case the time comes

Chrysler Crossfire is basically an old shape Merc SLK with American build quality.. poor handling, poor reliability and oddball looks.  Although I quite like the looks..

An SL 350 :-\ quick enough to be interesting, but steel rather than air sprung and therefore not as highly strung as the SL500 :y

Crossfire SRT-6 although rare is a pocket rocket with the supercharged 3.2 v6 from the SLK32 AMG...

......

Not that un-common, plenty of sporty Mercs have different tyres/rims front & back ........ even the Smart's rims are completely different (different width & offset - though the tyres are the same  ???)

Clarkson likened the profile of the Crossfire to 'a dog taking a dump'..... :y

No sports cars on the list yet, then.  ::)

A sports car needs to be light and pointy, with impeccable handling, and as at home on the track as on the road. Power to weight ratio - yes, but further down the list.

I think the MX5 is as close as we've got so far. Don't dismiss them without driving a properly sorted one. They are great fun, but a bit slow to be a true sports car.

Kit cars might be worth a look. Depends on budget, whether you need it as an everyday car or a summer toy and how handy you are w8ith the spanners.

Not sure if its classed as a "sports" car, but I always liked the look of the Mazda mx6. Not too many going about either
