this would be nice :)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1998-PORSCHE-BOXSTER-BLUE/161359488456?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131017132637%26meid%3D8330227283821768759%26pid%3D100033%26prg%3D20131017132637%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D121385851654
For a girl... a standard 106GTI will keep that honest, two of my mates had one of each and the chap with the Porsche wasn't happy that he couldn't shake the Pug ;D

a 106 gti with light mods can  see its dust only..  porsche around 6 seconds 0-60 without any mods.. and if we are talking turbo 106 it can keep up with many ;)

ps: 1.6 106 gti standard 0-60 8.4 secs

Modern cheap sports car? Obviously an Elise or a VX220, both cheap (ish) now.

Older then its a Morgan +8, TVR Chimera, Alfa Spider or a Marcos

The Caterfield 7 things are another obvious choice, but there is always the MR2 for a bit more cheapness

Make sure the chassis is sound!

But yes, most V8 Trevcars would be ticking boxes. :y

They are basically a Kit car that comes ready-built, though, so make sure you're handy with the spanners!

Cerbera Speed Eight would be my choice in an ideal money-no-object world.

Yep, pick up a cheap project Elise with a grenaded K series engine perhaps? Most who go that route after other sports cars seem to end up underwhelmed, mind.

only 442 built, (lets sell an expensive car in a recession?)  ::)

you wont be parked next to a similar car each time you go out like an MGB etc

I recon this one is very undervalued, mine is insured for £5500,
