Hi

I am sure I read a post on here, about being able to convert solid disc brake calipers, to use on a 2.6 Omega with vented discs. By splitting the damage vented disc caliper and fittiing the spacer from it to the solid brake caliper. So it will work on the vented discs.  If it will work is there any specific size caliper, for example off a 2.2? Also would the fact that the pistons off the solid discs are smaller, make any difference to the braking, when made up to fit on the 2.6? Also what refurb kit, would I need to get the O rings, for the spacer piece, when fitting in the solid disc caliper?

The reason why I am asking is that I am going to be doing some work on the brake system on my 2.6. When last I did some work on them, I wasn't really happy with how they looked. The bleed nipple has snapped level with the caliper on the one and it looks like a ease out, has been snapped in it.

Sorry for all the questions. Thanks in advance for any help.

Omega General Help / Brake pipe connectors
« on: 02 February 2023, 12:43:44 »
Would anyone, have the correct sizes I need for the brake line fittings, on the ABS pump and the one that goes to the flexi joint, on the front of a 2002 2.6 omega. I have found the brake line 3/16" 4.75mm. I am wanting to replace the front brake lines from the ABS pump to the flexi pipe.

Thanks in advance for any help.

General Car Chat / Passed MOT
« on: 30 January 2023, 15:26:55 »
My 2.6 Omega, passed the MOT. No rust advisories, or warnings. So now sorted for another year. Just general maintenance. Now got to sort out the 2.0ltr Omega Estate, so can hopefully get a MOT on it and start using it.

Thanks DG for the quick reply.  Hopefully this will be the last big job before it goes for MOT.
Thought it might of been rear wheel bearings, but the noise is a high pitch wine, from the back that gets unbearable. It doesn't change pitch on a straight or turning in any direction. So going to change the diff and hopefully the noise will go.  :)

Fitted new exhaust manifold without the EGR and SAI. New downpipe off a 2.2 and O2 sensor fitted. All welding been done. New brake calipers, discs and pads done front and back, including the handbrake system. All front suspension done. New back springs and shocks. So should be ok with all that. So hopefully will pass.

Only problem then is will have my 2.6 saloon, which has had loads of work done to it. The wifes 2 ltr estate and a Astra G, with the 1.6 8v engine in, that she got to use while the estate has been worked on. But she likes the Astra so much, that I have been told the saloon has to go.

All the best to you for next year.

Hi
Hope everyone had a good Christmas.

Hoping to get the diff replaced on the 2ltr, in the next week.  But have another question, before starting it. Can the retaining clips, on the diff side of the drive shafts be reused aswell? I have the proper tool, to remove the drive shaft, from the old diff so I can fit them in the replacement diff.

Thanks again for any help.

All the best for Next year.

Thanks biggriffin, for the quick reply.  Will some blue thread loc, be needed or just fit dry?

I thought I would ask as the Haynes manual, says renew bolts because of the angle settings.

Stage 1 90Nm
Stage 2 Tighten 45 degrees
Stage 3 Tighten 15 degrees

Omega General Help / Diff bracket bolt help
« on: 26 November 2022, 09:39:43 »
Can anyone help me? I have got a replacement, diff for the 2ltr Omega. It didn't come with the front bracket. So I was going to use the bracket off the old diff I am taking off. I have read that the 3 bolts have to be replaced? I have looked everywhere for new ones, but can only find, ones removed from diffs in Russia.  Can these bolts be reused, as from what I have read they are torqued and angle tightened? Or could a normal High tensile bolt, be used instead with some blue thread loc?

I have attached a picture to show the bolts I mean. Number 8 arrowed.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't drive it crazy. It's only been once above 3000rpm, since I have had it. And that was when it was being test driven, by GastronomicKleptomaniac. After some work was done on it.  ;D The wife says I drive like Miss Daisy. LOL. My reply to her is there are too many idiots, out there.

Thank you DG for the quick reply.

Have used Big Red before, when refurbishing the 2ltr Omega Estate. Helpfull company.  Have I understood correct, that I can fit the solid discs and calipers to match, instead of the 2.6 vented discs and calipers?  Would it make any difference to braking if I changed, to the solid disc setup? Quite happy to change to the solid setup, if no noticeable braking difference.

I have problems with my 2.6 rear calipers. They work, but they are tatty. The bleed nipple has broke on one. I read on here that calipers from solid rear discs, can be made into vented calipers. By fitting in the spacer, from the vented caliper but it also mentions seals. Are they O rings in the spacers and can they be purchased, in repair kits?

Also can any rear caliper from any omega, work to do the conversion?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I am looking for a pair of working 2.6 rear calipers, to fit original vented discs. I am not worried if they look a bit rusty, as long as pistons move and bleed nipples undo. As I will be refurbishing them. If they can be posted, that would be great. Or if near to Darlington or Durham, can collect. I read my messages, regular if you wish to Message me.

Thanks in advance, for any help.

Omega General Help / Re: New rod bolts
« on: 09 October 2022, 13:43:29 »
When I changed the wishbones, and track rods on the wifes car. I got new bolts and nuts. They weren't dear. The bolts to hold the ball joint on wishbone to hub were about £4 each on ebay for genuine bolt, the nuts were not much more each. (Think it was Vauxhall superstore, I got them from). I was glad I did, as the original nut was siezed so just cut it off).

I trust your knowledge, more than their's. :y

Been sorting out wifes 2003 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 8v for MOT. She recently got it as a stand in, while her omega is being sorted. Had to do front brakes. Also had to change radiator due to the outlet on it being cracked.  Had fun undoing the Automatic Gearbox, cooler pipes from it. Luckily had drained the engine and radiator of coolant before hand. As the one banjo, had siezed into the brass housing on the radiator. I ended up mangling the radiator fitting. Now trying to find out if the autobox takes, normal DexIII fluid. Rang Vauxhall parts dept, was a waste of time. Got off the phone, still not knowing.
