Title: Thorens TD 320 MK III
Post by: Zirfeld on 26 February 2018, 17:44:22
Found a very nice classic turntable. A Thorens TD 320 MK III. 30 years old.

Not unusual....

BUT THE TABLE IS BRAND NEW IN HIS ORIGINAL BOX. NEVER USED!

The price was unbelievable low. The TD 320 comes with a Stanton epoch II cartridge, factory assembling...

I am happy....

Hi Lizzy

What is your story about Thorens? Mine is very special long....

Hi ronnyd

I am a little splitted these days. There are still serious problems with my wife's health. She is home again, but not in stable condition. I do my very best to help her in any way, but sometimes it is a very hard job for both of us.

The other side looks brighter. The last months gave me some commercial success, so i can think about some private investigations. A classic Thorens, a own garage (better two) and a MV6. Regarding the MV6 i think the Vauxhalls are very interesting, because of the prices in UK. I prefer an early model (late 93/ early 94) because I decided to get a H (historic) licence as soon as possible. A late 93 MV6 is able to get a German H-licence in autumn 2023. So, maybe i need some assistance later this year. I never bought a car in the UK....

I used to Work as an HiFi Engineer for Thorens / Ortofon moons ago before moving into the Companies Recording Studio as a Sound Engineer.  ;)

Still got my TD125 mkII and a fitted Ortofon M15E Super kicking around somewhere.  :)

Yep, sadly, as most things now, Thorens Decks are worth more in Spare Parts than whole, so there getting a bit thin on the ground these days.  :'(

I did the set up of the turntable yesterday and i was very surprised that the 30 year old belt works perfect. But there was a little noise from the motor bearings. But i knew the Berger motors...they are undestroyable. So i decided to start a 12h burn in run to remove the dust of the years. The turntable is now running absolutely calm. Also everything else runs perfect.

If it weren't for the fuss and inconvenience, not to mention the hiss and pops, I would play some of my old vinyl via a Shure V15 III cartride and Lencolean wet cleaner.....

Hi Bigron

A good equipment does not produce any noise in the background. The best product i ever used to clean records is the Lorrycraft machine from England. Thanx to Terry and Nigel

I did buy the best I could afford - that Shure cartridge did hurt my wallet!
I also used distilled water plus isopropyl alcochol in the Lencolean, but the downside is that once played wet, records always need to be played wet.
Posh London HiFi shops used to offer a wet deep cleaning service for vinyl (Monks machine, as I nearly recall?) which reputedly worked well, nut the nearest shop was too far away and in any event, I couldn't afford it!
But still, I do miss my vinyl.....

Hi Lizzy

What is your story about Thorens? Mine is very special long....

Rolf

Yes, my involvement with them goes way back to the early 1970's.  I also had a Dynatron system that was my real pride and joy, although my new husband used to prattle on about Gerrards and BSR turntables being the best, but I still preferred my Thorens and Dynatron as I just liked the sound.  Never exactly an enthusiast of turn tables. Just liked the records I played on them which I still think what counts the most! ;D ;)

Hi Lizzy

Thorens was always a dream of mine. In the late 70s i saw the Thorens Reference on the Berlin "Funkausstellung" as a young boy.

It was clear, I can never afford such a machine. So 30 years have to go through the land to meet A.J Van den Hul on Frankfurt High End Show. He said you can never realize your ideas. I can do it, i said. Next year, this place he said.

So my Reference was born. I Did it.

Do you remember  the old massed produced BSRs that were just pressed steel? When i got my factory refurbed Goldring Lenco turntable with the platter weighing 9lb it opened up a whole world of better sounds. Now over 40yrs old and still going strong. :y Not that i use it much lately as i can,t be arsed to get my vinyl down from upstairs. :-[  Maybe tomorrow. :)

I have a Shure M91ED which was a model or two down from the V15 but very similar mechanically. Just splashed out on a Jico SAS stylus for it and it's sounding pretty good, but I also got offered a 2nd hand Benz Micro Ace L for a price I couldn't miss, and it does trounce the Shure somewhat. ;D

I never find a problem with static after cleaning records. Charity shop basket cases play like new when dry as long as there's no actual damage. So far I've been using a "Disco Antistat" with the fluid that comes with it, but I have a source of DI water and isopropanol to go in the cleaning bath when it's done. Just need to get some Ilfotol to complete the mix!

Wow Rolf - that's a very impressive looking project. :y

Yes, I think I do in the 1970's, although my ex would know far more about them than me!  BSR certainly were the major supplier of turntables back then that even I noticed. ::) ::) :D :D

Goldring certainly is the name you saw everywhere in the day :y

Bit different to when I bought my first 78 gramophone for 2/6d ;)

Seriously, how can they justify that price? NO vinyl could ever sound so good as to warrant it, and coulkd it possibly perfom about 1,000 times better than a Garrard Zero 100?

Because the fools with their gold plated "Hi Fi quality" power cables and speaker cables as fat as your arm will happily pay it to believe in their own mind that the sound is superior to anything anyone else has ever heard...

By the time they can afford such things, Aaron, their "Golden Ears" will have deteriorated to such an extent as to make it pointless - if it ever was?

Exactly this. The Hi-Fi press in the 80's raised this turntable to legendary status with their superlative reviews whilst the Japanese manufacturers quietly got on with more important things like not driving the platter with a manky elastic band and not making the plinth out of old fruit cartons.  ;D

Meanwhile, the upgrades started rolling in for the "golden eared" folk and suddenly an already overpriced turntable had to be spec'ed up to cost a 5 figure sum before your peers in audiophilia would respect it. ;D The madness continues to this day.

A better option would be to buy a 2nd hand Japanese direct drive for £100. They are all bomb proof, and they all sound great after a drop of oil on the spindle bearing and a check for play in the tonearm bearings.

Im having Gold Plated Flaps fitted to my Ears soon, meaning I can listen to Digital 0's and 1's directly without the need for any of this Analogue stuff.  :)

If that works out, I probably do the Laser Eye Surgery thing so I can read CD and DVD's directly.  :D

Too quiet and clinical, whereas it it sounds like it is being played next to a bowl of freshly made Rice Crispies that's an authentic warm vinyl sound. ;D ;D ;D The crackles and pops sound even better when played through an £18k turntable, apparently. ;D ;D ;D

Finally got off my arris and dug out some of my old vinyl albums. Had horrific mains "hum" when the turntable first fired up but wiggled a few leads and all ok. Had a lazy afternoon, (tooth extraction this morning-- aagh)  ::) Listened to some Moody Blues, Marillion and Barclay James Harvest, with the brilliant John Lees. Made a great change from the crap on the telly. Oh the joys of being retired. :y
