oil
« on: 08 October 2007, 08:41:24 »

Since ive owned my omega i service it every 6 months i use only VX parts, all i want to know is, is the oil im using ok for this type of engine? its VX 5w/30 fully synthetic i use this type of oil cos of the mileage its now on 103000 & i like to keep the engine well maintained and a few extra quid for quality parts should be better in the long run.

Cheers

You should save your self a few quid and use the recommend oil which is the 10w 40 semi from Vauxhall.
There is nothing wrong with what you are using its just a little unnessasry.

NB:- must end this thread now :-X

One an older engine, sometimes a thinner oil isn't so good.  My MV6 is 145k, and tractor 120k. Both have semi.

You'd probably do better spending the extra £ on more frequent oil/filter changes (although I don't know how often you're doing it today)

Very true. The main advantage of exotic oils is longer life. Great if you're sticking to VXs recommendations and running it for 20,000 miles (although no oil will last that long). If you're changing the oil regularly you don't need to spend as much, and by regularly changing oil and filter you're removing the contamination of water, acids and carbon that builds up in any oil, cheap or expensive.

5W30 is not a bad choice for the winter months as it'll help with cold starts, and VX sell an own-brand one that's good value. If the engine consumes any oil, as TheBoy says, it may be better to choose the thicker oil.
