Anyone see the item that suggested around 570,000 helpings of cocaine are served up in London each day!

When I was in Scarborough recently people were smoking weed openly.

Is society tolerating drug use because it helps the economy?   Too difficult to stop supply lines? Too much money being paid to the police to be elsewhere? The going rate for a policeman to be “ elsewhere” when a drug boat lands in Southern Spain is a measly 60k apparently.

Does it matter?

I'm afraid anyone who is on drugs is in my opinion a very weak person & deserves the inevitable outcome , the problem being the innocent victims of these total idiots.
No time for any of them & no point in trying to help them.
Police are thin on the ground now I just hate to think what society will be like in 20 or 30 years time, fortunately it is very unlikely I will be around.

Having had the misfortune of dealing with various scum who think that doing half a kilo of coke just before closing time is a really good idea, legalising it will achieve absolutely zero beyond possibly raising a bit of tax revenue.

And having spent the last 25 yrs of my full time career as an addiction specialist working with the hardcore Heroin and Crack cocaine addicts daily I am experienced enough to know you are talking out of your arse, it's not going away and never will, currently your PAYE and NI contributions are paying my wages and for the prison populations telly's and baccy. Legalisation will reduce the street value, reduce offending, communicable diseases, deaths and financial burden of imprisoning people.

I'd like to meet the man who could snort half a kilo too !

Drug dealers are the most ruthless people on the planet. If drugs were legalised (presumably for over 18,s) they would change their business model, by selling to under 18,s, and selling much stronger variants than the legal versions.
Whats the answer ? there isn't one, unless we grow a pair and restore the death penalty for a lot of serious crimes, including dealing drugs.

Not saying its inevitable by any means, but its a gamble. Same as smoking cannabis is playing Russian roulette with your sanity. Some people enjoy it with no lasting effects. Others end up in an awful mental state because of it. My son used to swear it was harmless enjoyment until it drove him to the brink of suicide. It took him 15 years to recover from the effect it had on him.
Hence why I hate drugs and would happily shoot anyone who advocates normalising them.

My half kilo statement was obviously tongue in cheek but the obvious effects various drugs had on otherwise normal, reasonable people and having to deal with those people week in week out was enough to make me stop taxi driving. And that wasn't just the passengers.

Also my supervisor of six years at one of my first jobs developed also serious mental issues from smoking more and more weed over the years. Did him no favours whatsoever.

Not suggesting that addiction isn't something that needs to be dealt with, and if that's how you choose to waste your time that that's your choice, but recreational drug use/abuse serves zero purpose in a functioning society.

I am with Albs on the shooting solution. Legalisation only condones poor choices.

I would go down the control and tax route. Try it for  3 years and see what happens. The system we currently have in place clearly isn't working.

They would need to be cheap enough to completely undermine the criminal aspects currently associated with supply and consumption, which would only serve to normalise it, and whilst it would almost certainly bring in revenue, it would be at the expense of an exponential increase in abuse, with all the pressures that would bring to the health system. The cost of which wouldn't be bourne by the revenue. Besides this would do nothing to prevent the effects on users and their subsequent behaviour... regardless of whether a person ends up quietly slumped in a corner or goes into a psychotic rage, they will be of zero use to productive society.

Kill the supply chain with tougher enforcement and punishment and watch the price increase far out of reach of normal society. No supply and no demand equals no industry.

Conscious choice maybe, but not an informed one. When I was teaching, I invited a member of the local Drugs Watch team to give a talk on drug abuse. He started by asking if the students thought that cannabis was harmful. Most considwewd it to be as "safe" as tobacco.
He then proceded to show slides of the physical effects of smoking weed - mainly on the gonads! He described in graphic detail how considerable shrinkage and ulceration would take place, rendering them unable to  father children and possibly lose their manhood altogether.
The students resolved to give up smoking weed!

That's what I meant by informed choice......

As I said earlier, the dealers would change their business model to target under 18,s much more, and sell product which is much stronger than the safer legal stuff. Not much would change in reality. The police have decriminalised most drugs in all but name by turning a blind eye to most of its use, but it hasn't helped matters at all.
As for informed choices. Can you call a 14 or 15 year old smoking skunk at school with their mates, because they desperately want to fit in an informed choice ?
Nah, shooting the dealers and importers (cutting the head off the snake) is the only real answer.
