Need to prove if it's the speaker outputs off the head unit, the cabling, the speakers or the Bose.

I'd try a known good speaker connected to the headunit with all others disconnected, at least then you can prove the Head Unit is good for starters.

I've seen a similar problem on a Cavalier years ago and it turned out to be a short on both speaker wires to earth as they went through to the front door which then brought down all of the speaker outputs on the Head Unit

does the head unit actually state "bose" on the cassette door? As if not, it will be sending high level signals through the speaker outputs and the bose amplifier will trip as it expects to be fed line level signals ... assuming the elite is pre or mini-facelift ...

Sorry, didn't realise it was line level from the head unit, thought it was a seperate set of channels for the BOSE. Ignore my earlier advice! ;D

Given that the HU was dead/unplugged, has somebody been hacking around with it then???

...and it's a facelift isn't it?

Unlikely to be the following, (you'd probably hear something at least), but It could be both of the balance pots have dry joints.
i.e. the one that controls the left channel is acting as if the balance is all the way right and vise versa for the right channel.

See my post in the CDR 2005 thread....
