Exhaust horse hair
« on: 10 April 2014, 12:40:26 »

Got the Elite back from Scotland last night :D :D, went out this morning to unpack to find horse hair coming from the back box. Now on the way down she was a bit slow on kick down and the mpg was down to 29mpg on a 400 mile run sat at 70 mph yes 70mph. What kind of sound do they make when the exhaust is like this as have never had it before, was reported that a bearing was on the way out.  ??? :-\

sounds awesome for a while.
Then it blocks the exhaust, and it goes "bang!".

I know I mentioned it before, but when I was looking it up on here (couple of years ago) there was at least one tale of someone's petrol tank being holed by the "bang"  :o

Yup, mine did the same. back box went with a bang and scared the $h1t outa me too!!! Hair flailing out the back doing motorway speeds comin home from work at 3am. Looked underneath it (after recovering from the nightmares) later on in the day and it had put a hugh dent in the heat shield near to the fuel tank  :o :o :o how it didn't rupture it I'll never know  ???

I'm lucky in the fact that I have another Omega to use but I will look at fitting the new exhaust this Sunday if weather is good, just as well it was in the post today. I have read about this in the past but have never seen it, is it only the Vauxhall exhaust that does this or are all makes the same?

Wow, I must have dodged a bullet! It happened to me on my previous Omega on a trip from Essex to Dorset; saw the stuff poking out of the tailpipe when stopped at Fleet Services, pulled a lot out and had no idea what it was, but no difference in exhaust note,or performance, so I continued on my way.
The following day I called in to a local garage, asked what it was and was told it was simply heatproof sound deadening, like loft insulation, and to pull whatever I can see out and ignore it.
If I had known of the potential explosion risk, I would have been off to Marks and Spencers at once! ;D
Still, maybe with most of the horse hair removed it was safe enough?

I never noticed the hair from the exhaust,i wonder if the long motorway blast was a factor?

Im pretty sure the bearing is away mate as it goes away when you corner to left

I still dont know how you suffered that rumble all the way from Glasgow to Swindon! your ears must still be ringing!! :D :D

The rumble was ok set at 70mph, but when I had to come down to 50-40 as I went past the many road works on the way south WOW :D :D big wake up call. Still it is sat at work now until I have time to fit the exhaust as when I tried on Sunday some off the bolt would not move so will have to drill out and re-tap. No big deal as I say the exhaust is a service item anyway and the one on there is the original (well Vauxhall part anyway). Once done I will soon find out if a bearing has gone. :y
