Thanks for the comments peeps, not even thought about some of the suggestions....... ;) :D

I have been running diesel Autos since 2007 and never had a problem, my car get up to full speed and temperature on my commute, remember this is a ‘Northern’ mostly 70 MPH commute on good fast roads........... :y :y

Citoren C4 Grand and Peugeot 3008 are both firm contenders, loved my Citroen possible my 3rd best all time car modern car, only beaten by a 2.7 auto Gallant and a 2.7 Auto Rover.

Seat Altea – Not a car I was aware of, worth consideration, auto diesel, sadly nothing close by.

VW Tiguan – Not aware, only Petrol auto, not good enough on fuel

VW Touareg – fuel same as the Jeep

Ford Galaxy – May be worthy of further consideration, sure I read, there was a problem with Ford auto boxes around 08 /09? I did got to a Ford / Nissan dealer today, Evans Halshaw in Darlington, shocking access could not find anywhere to park, turned around and drove out, won’t be buying anything from there............ >:( >:(

Nissan X-Train – Possibly worthy of further consideration, not as good on fuel as I hope for and a 4x4, Sister in Law has got into the habit of borrowing the Jeep at weekends to tow a horse box, got beyond a joke now really – have offered them the opportunity to purchase said Jeep though........ :D :D

Vx Zafira – Worth looking at further..........

Chevvy Orlando – Ticks all the boxes and is not French........

Toyota Verso – worthy of further consideration, not so good with fuel though.

I am with Andy B and wonder what is available that is RWD, Auto and does 40 MPG +......... ;) ;)

The Skoda Yeti looks fab, have looked at those before; not sure how robust these little high revving engineers will be in the long term. Other problem is it is only a 1.2, I need to add another requirement, Must be 1.6L or over maximum mileage reimbursement then.......... :y

No BMW’s or anything too ostentatious, as used for work........ :-X :-X

Shame wrt your last sentence  :-\ brothers 330d auto is in the same tax bracket as my 2.0 grot box, and does over 40mpg on his commute, and will keep my 3.2 honest ::)

Jag XFs are starting to be more available too... plod ones start at £8k...  :y

Went to BCA in Brum just before Christmas, two in the sale, one metallic red unmarked and tidy, was about £9k; tother, a silver marked car was a bit scruffy, but still fetched £8k, both 3.0twin turbo diesels autos iirc...

Had one been white ::)

They do a 1.8 petrol but can't find one under £10k

Think I said once before, we had the XF's on test but the misers said they were too expensive  >:( >:( >:( Bobbies loved em & said they were the quickest diesel they've driven & handled very well.

Wonder what the BM repair bill is standing at  :o :o :o ::) ::) ::)

My 1.9 tdi manual did 135k miles in two years without actually blowing up, inspite of me driving it ::)

Point is they're cheap as chips, and not that bad (for a good looking Golf), prices range from £1850 upto about £12k for a nearly new one, and have a good spread of engines/gearboxes :y

If I were going to buy a saloon car in that price range it would be an Omega....... ;) ;)

No one has mentioned the Meriva, is there a reason for that...?
