Are there any images showing the location of all the coolant hoses and pipes that live around the back of the V6? Ya know all the stuff that's likely to leak...

Now then that is a clean engine indeed.... Impressed.... I was interested as to what can leak behind there other than what has already been renewed or re sealed that the coolant would exit just beyond the the oil filter housing.... A lot more going on behind there than i expected..... $:-\$

Thats what i thought and many others

But its all about having a feel for the pipes and tracing the coolant pipes feeling for leaks . Other than that take the plenum and inlets off and you will see any coolant leak , best to pressure test

many recent coolants have dye in them.. if not you can add.. and if you can check with blacklight (in dark) you can spot leaks easily..

and one more . coolant reservoir cap can also leak but not easy to see , instead you can hear when engine is hot..

I know where the leak exits but not where it started that's the problem... The header tank cap isn't it though.

Elite Pete has done alot of work behind there changing and re sealing this and that and it still uses more coolant than fuel .... Well not quite but you know what i meen..

Coolant bridge seals are favourite for leaks or if its using that much check the hbv

Taken off.. Re sealed and fitted... Along with... Water pump, HBV , thermostat and drain tube, oil cooler and plate ( all using GM parts) header tank and one hose from coolant bridge to HBV

I was informed to replace with new bridge seals . Best to pressure test it for best idea without replacing willy nilly

I know a water leak can start from a mile away from where it exits which is a pain in the ass.. It exists from just past the oil filter housing.

Further, a pressure test would be a good place to start. Actually finding the leak source before doing anything would be good. If its 99 m.y. look closely at core plugs behind pot 6 between the cylinder head and coil PAC.

Well a local garage to me has just told me its head gasket? The car has only covered 107k so still a pup really? Not sure i trust his diagnosis though?

No don't trust them. Pressurise the cooling system. It forces the coolant out with engine off so you can trace the leak.

That's what the car went in for... Compression test albeit i didn't see this done as it was left with him.

Compression test is a different test to pressurising the Cooling system $:-\$

What where the figures resulting from the test?

As said, compression test measures the cylinder compression in the combustion chamber.

Pressurising the coolant system is to do with the coolant jacket surrounding the cylinders. Not within the cylinders.

Core plug more likely.

Head off to repair if so.

Stick a bottle of bars in it. IMO.

Ah ok, just about visible from underneath, guess the leaj is from the outer rear corner of cylinder 6... Which, iirc is where the '98 vintage engines tend to fail $:-\$

Why? Its cheaper to repair it than buy another car.

Stick a bottle of bars leak stop, or rad weld, or whatever its called in the coolant bottle and see if the leak stops.
Couple of quid.

Couple of quid.

If using radweld etc, then be sure to set the climate panel to Lo on both sides for a week. This should stop it clogging up the heater matrix

To be fair the cooling system was in a very poor condition when Keith bought the car. I suspect there had been a long term leak and someone had filled the cooling system with k seal/ rad weld at some point as the thermostat and heater matrix were clogged with crud and the coolant was orange sludge. One other thing. I pressure tested the cooling system before doing the coolant bridge and oil cooler cover and it held pressure for a good 10 minutes no problem so it seems to be when the engine is hot $:-\$

It wont be that much , even if it was its still cheaper than buying another car that you mite have more problems with . Once thats done it will be piece of mind its never going to happen again

Thats if it is head gasket $:-\$ I think my old Elite was loosing coolant on the passenger side back pot and that was a 98-99 .. only lost about a pint of coolant every 2 months so i just kept topping it up . I was tempted to put K seal in but then the tappets started chatting to each other
