Hi is there anyone near to me I live in Paisley, that could change a gearbox on a 2001 2.2 Estate?. I can get the replacement box. I am willing to help with the job if needs be, the car can be left for the job to be done.  I don't have anywhere at my house to do it. If there is someone what sort of price am I looking at for it to be done? I have just been quoted a price from a Automatic gearbox specialist that is nearly three times the price, the car is worth.

Thanks in advance.

£200 should see it swapped out... If your car is only worth a third of that, it might be time to get shot :o

£1,200 ought to see a brand new box fitted :-\

I was quoted £2100+Vat for a overhaul of the box from the specialist.  The person who I bought the car off, has given me some of the purchase price back as a way of apology, for all the trouble. Someone on Facebook is messaging me details of a person in Edinburgh, that knows Omegas. The car is in good condition and has recently had nearly £1000 worth of engine work done on it, plus other things including full exhaust and O2 sensors, I have all the paperwork to back it up so apart from box nothing needs doing for a while.  The body is in good condition aswell. That is the reason I would like to keep it on the road. :y

What did the specialist say ? . If it were me for the sake of dropping the auto sumps and cleaning the filter/replacing and refilling or have you had level checked ? .

Hi cam.in.head

His reply to my email, without him even seeing it was this. "I could charge you for that but can tell you for free that your transmission is slipping and needs an overhaul.
The fluid needs to be checked for antifreeze contamination in case the cooler is leaking in the radiator, in fact we recommend fitting a new radiator."
I have checked the coolant tank as radiator is sealed, the antifreeze is the correct colour without anything in it, as I looked online for what the coolant would be like if ATF was in it. If the box was slipping, wouldn't it be all the time and not intermittent? I haven't checked fluid level yet as unable to get a replacement washer for the plug.  Vauxhall no longer sell it, some other members have said use a bit of thread tape or take the plug to a shop to find one. I don't want to take the plug out and then not be able to seal it upon putting it back in.

Hi Shackeng.  The mileage is 110800 on the clock, before I got the car the box had recently had a filter and fluid change. I have the bill to show it was done and not hearsay.

I am going to be cleaning the Throttle body as another suggestion. I was able to take a quick look yesterday and the body is dirty inside, so have got the gasket coming and will be cleaning it, at least another thing to tick off the list.  The annoying thing is that when it is working ok the box changes smoothly, no noises or anything.  The problem is a intermittent one.

Thanks

The washer is just a generic copper washer. Shouldn't be difficult to replace. I would be more concerned with checking fluid level and condition even if you haver to use the old washer, or anything else that comes to hand, as a temporary measure.  :y
I have never heard of ATF / coolant mixing on any Omega btw.  ;)

In my years of omegas, I've never heard of the, gearbox cooler, failing and allowing coolent to mix with the atf.

A few bits of info for you mate.

1/. There is no way antifreeze can get into the ATF unless somebody puts it in. Its a sealed system so if your gearbox specialist says different, walk away  ;)
2/. You say that the ATF has been changed ?  Do you know for a fact it has been done or have you just got a receipt  ;)
Its a shitty job and it wouldnt be the first time a garage has wrote out a reciept and done sweet f**k all work other then giving it a wipe down  :(
3/. IF it was changed, was it filled while the car was level and the engine running ?
If the engine wasn't running, the box will be missing a good 2 litres because it needs to be running to fill the torque convertor  ;)

I'd check fluid (myself, not pay anyone), and unless it needs 3 or 4l, wouldn't waste any more time on this gearbox.

For that reason, don't worry too much about the copper washer ;)

Yes that would be my first line of thought re fluid. Drive car around until up to temp, buy a litre  of dex3 and idealy get the car up on a lift. Local garage that you know or maybee a friendly exhsust centre .remove level plug with car in park and engine running.if nothing runs out add some fluid or loop a bent short wire in hole and down to check level.other ways of checking if no lift available are over a pit or the way i did mine was jack up and support, remove plug and add fluid, leave plug out then lower car back to level ground.if no fluid runs out then it still isnt full!.but much easier on a garage lift and safer.
Also hate how people can answer questions like that over the phone quoting worst case scenario usually. I may be wrong but were all omegas equipped with a seperate atf cooler in front of the radiator like my 2.6 or were some integral with the engine cooling rad? .if not then as was said earlier no antifreeze could ever get into the atf.

Earlier Omegas had an ATF cooler integrated into one side of the main rad. Not sure about 2.2 though.  Not heard of one leaking before though, and if it did significantly enough to impact ATF, there would be signs...

Thats what i wondered. So its the usual case of a specialist not knowing the car and quoting worst case scenario. Thats why we join these forums.people on here know what theyre talikng about.all about keeping our hobby alive .correctly. And honestly.

Thanks everyone for the replies and help, it is very much appreciated.  Hi tigers_gonads I don't honestly know if work was done, just going on what previous owner said and the receipt.  I have got 1ltr of Dex3 that I am picking up tommorow, so will do as you all suggest and do a level check. Is there a way to check the colour of the fluid already in the box, without dropping sump, so can see what it is like before level check, red, brown, dirty or smelly. etc?

Sorry to be a nuisance asking so many questions, all the other Omegas I have owned never had any problems that were hard to diagnose and weren't DBW throttle.

Thanks again everyone, that is why I always come onto here first. Down to earth people and honest advice.

With engine off Undo level plug and some fluid will come out to look at colour if req.Note,if no fluid comes out then the level is DEFINTELY too low .these boxes have the correct level when up to temp and running.they go up considerably if the engine is stopped.
