Hi,

According to my local garage,

To supply and fit a new radiator £250.00 inc. pressure test.

To carry out a Timing belt change + Full service, £500.00.

The garage informed me, the belt comes with a 2 year warranty, should the belt brake, all work and damage is covered by the belt company?

Is this a lot off money to pay? or is this about right.

Don't know about the radiator, but the stealers to do the Cambelt and tensioners is £375 with the associated guarantees that they offer.  Does that help??  I would personally do it my self - with the knowledge and help on here you can do it

Radiator is about £150 IIRC, pressure test??? What is that - fill with water run the car and see?

Cambelt. You CANNOT break them. I suppose if you got two JCBs and pulled in opposite directions you MIGHT have a chance. No, the tensioners give - especially if incorrectly fitted.

Cambelt kit including tensioners is £89 on trade club. Do the water pump at the same time + £22.50.

Get the DVD or ask Jamesv6 to do it. he is a top mechanic and will change that cambelt kit in 2 hours flat. Radiator is an hours job.

I would say to do yourself will take a saturday morning and a bit. Cost will be around £300 for all the parts. Labour free. Ask James if you don't fancy the job. He will be a lot cheaper than the garage AND a lot better to!

£500 for a cambelt change - I think a VX dealer would be cheaper and with probably slightly less chance of bodging it - at least they will have access to the specific tools (does not guarantee they will use them correctly....)

Cambelt is doable yourself: hire or borrow the timing kit and get the DVD.  This is available from 'Robin Hood' pm him for details.

Actually for that sory of money, you'll probably get some volunteers here to do the work for you and with genuine VX parts

The rad for my V6 with auto box & A/C (can't imagine why it makes a difference :-?) + a gallon of antifreeze was a nadgers over £200 from the dealers with a Trade Club card.

I was told retail was nearer £250 for the rad.

Last dealer to do mine charged about £250 for belt and tensioners....

Both rad and cambelt are diy jobs, though cambelt does need special tools (£50 from ebay, sell them on when done (or hire out to other members )

Personaly I would do everything yourself, 1. You are only paying for the parts you need, 2 No labour costs, and 3 If you do the job yourself YOU know the job has been done properly at least you will have the satisfaction knowing the job HAS been done properly.  

Best thing to do is take the advise of all that reply to your post and go from there.

 cam belt is easy on 2.0l 16 v
not done a v6 yet

done mine twice take your time you cant go wrong plenty of help on here can buy locking tool for about a tenner (2.l 16v) i know autovaux hire them out
