Omega General Help / Re: MID / TID display options - mpg > l/100km
« on: 31 December 2007, 00:16:35 »
The cost to change it to l/km & back again would surely be better spent on buying fuel...or a night out for the family!

Buy a £3 calculator  :y

Omega General Help / Re: £350 for rear wheel bearing
« on: 10 July 2007, 18:39:03 »
I had three bearing replaced a few weeks ago - 2x front, 1x rear I WAS going to get all four done - but it took the guy just over 2 hours to do the rear...so we gave that a mutual wide swerve!

Was about £25+VAT for the actual bearing...£80+VAT to get it fitted.

£350 is VERY expensive...try a local independant that you trust.

From experience - you should get around an 8.9 in a 2.5 / 2.6 auto, 8.7 in a 2.5 manual & 7.7 in a 3.0 manual.

The BIGGEST improvement can be made by NOT having a full tank (run just above the red), empty the boot entirely including the spare wheel and don't have a passenger. Also tyre pressure at the high end of normal.  The tip of brake on in 'D' + Sports mode does work - but just have it throttled up a tiny bit. PLEASE don't be tempted to drop it into drive - in clunk is terrifying & the potential cost implications / embarrassment would literally be priceless.

Higher octane fuel won't make much of a difference to be perfectly honest - but it's a relatively low cost 'try it out'. Also ensure your air & fuel filters are in good order.

All that MIGHT shave 0.1 to 0.2 seconds off a normal time!

Anyway - all the best!

Omega General Help / Re: I have an auto but want a manual
« on: 02 August 2007, 23:41:22 »
I'm the opposite - I'd love a 3.0 auto instead of the manual MV6, mainly to keep the missus quieter as an auto accelerates a bit smoother when booting it...less fun, more practical.

But since I've practically rebuilt it (disks, pads, wheels, bearings, tyres, exhaust from cats etc.) it looks like I'm stuck with it for the next year as I couldn't justify spending about 50% of the value of the car in maintenance just to punt it.

Omega General Help / Re: conversion

Few things to concider, like:

Whatever is spent on the conversion - will it SAVE more than that in fuel in the time you keep the car.
or if a DIY - will it invalidate your insurance as they are unlikely to insure a non-certified installation / installer.

Would agree - that of any of the additives Forte tends to be the best, and recommended by REAL mechanics...the engine flush is good...but then again, it's hard to tell!

That said, unless you have a real case for concern .ie. dirty injectors they are usually more for a psycological benefit.

OK, I'm a bit of a sceptic with all of the lotions, potions & widgets, as if THOUSANDS of litres of petrol being forced through them doesn't keep them clean - what chance does one litre (diluted 1:50 to1:75) of 'cleaner' have?

Omega General Help / Re: will this really work
« on: 10 July 2007, 18:44:04 »
There are dozens of gimicks out there..and magnets on fuel lines is one of them, so are 'ecotec' valves, the majority of fuel additives (it's cheaper just buying more petrol), resistor 'chips', venturi vortex widgets...

Nothing works!! - If it did we'd ALL be using them!

Omega General Help / Re: General Advice needed

Sounds fairly normal.

The loud exhaust is probably 'cos it's been a replacement non-OEM rear box (at least).

The acceleration - if gentle in normal 'economy' mode  - it'll just carry on in 3rd/4th, but if as you say you kick down - it will drop to 2nd...and sometimes 1st.
'S' Sports mode will set the kick down a bit more aggresive & get it revving up to the limiter if you keep your foot planted. 120 ish is not uncommon in 3rd ;)

As for being quicker - I think the GLS weighs a wee bit less than some of the others, and that loud exhaust will be adding to the 'sensation'!

Traffic Master - disconnected mine, but a new subscription isn't all that expensive. Suppose it's a good idea if you do a lot of deadline motorway/main route miles.

Well, that's my take on it!

Omega General Help / Re: Computer screen

I've swapped them out many times.

The single yellow is just a TID and not an MID - but slots in just perfectly. As said all you will get is Time, Temp & Radio and a VERY basic set of warning lamps - NO sensor displays like LOW FLUID or HEADLAMP CHECK.

Omega General Help / Re: Air Con - A quick question
« on: 31 May 2007, 22:06:29 »
I'd recommend just doing it properly. Most car dealerships will do aircon servicing for about £50. I had one done at a Mazda dealer. Full vaccum of old refrigerant & oil, pressure/leak test & a recharge.

Using Halfords kits are just begging for problems - and they are not all that cheap.

Try these guys.

I just bought a couple of centre sections from these guys. VERY good for the money. Imported from Germany.

Both our Omegas are silver, I think that silver suits them better than any other colour. That is a very very nice looking Elite you have there. :y
I actually prefer the anthracite colour (metallic charcoal) over the silver, although they did also come in an absolutely stunning dark metallic blue (first estate I had).
It is a stunning example - I'm on my fourth and having looked for 'the perfect' Elite this one came onto the market - I just snapped it up. FSH & fairly low mileage and nearly every extra added (ONLY the colour screen & the phone are missing) - first registered owner was Vauxhall themselves - so nice 'flagship' model.

Ooh, such a nice car you got there! I'm drooling  ;)

I would die to get one myself, but, living in Norway makes that impossible. How much do you pay for an example like that?
Just for comparison, a 2002 2.2 Elegance (not sure what that converts to in the UK) with 41000 miles is about £16000 in this country.

Yet again, this car was just sweet  :)
These currently sell for between £1700 for a really horrible, rusty, super high mileage one to about £2500 for a mint example (PRIVATE SALE) - add £1000 to that if it was on a garage forecourt.

OK - bunch of photos taken the other day. 'Scuse the pine needles - they get everywhere!

Had been on the hunt for several years for a 'proper' 3.2 Elite - not some shoddy ex-plod GLS wanna-be. And got one (after a succession of Jags!) Proper nice example too.

Decent mpg too as average 25.5 over 752miles about half of that round town. Quite pleased at that!

Sadly having to sell as just rehomed a (rescued) dog. Wet dog+saloon car + full leather do not mix.

Well, put some 'new' wheels on her. Picked them up cheap...ie. cheaper than I was quoted to fully refurb the originals!!

They look OK (I suppose).
