Title: Battery replacement
Post by: Entwood on 20 January 2019, 19:28:11
The six year old vauxhall battery in the beast (3.2 saloon) is telling me it's had enough ...  if I start the car every day it just about copes ... if I leave it 72 hours then a boost pack is needed :( ... even when "flat" - 12.1 volts offload - it thinks it is fully recharged - 12.7 volts offload - in less than 3 hours on a 4 amp charger ... which is mathematically impossible.

It was £76.00 (+ VAT) ... but reduced to £49.99 (VAT) on trade club ....  so not done too badly ..  :)

So, where is the best place, at the moment, to purchase a battery for a 2001 3.2 saloon, and why, oh why, does every battery manufacturer now use a different product code !! you can't even search google easily  as there appears to be no single reference number .. :(

Do you apply a code!?

S4 £100 at ECP, so more yes, but not double.

Also not eBay tat.  :y

People don't learn ECP sell tat.

That's OK if you need some quick, or its cheap, but most ECP shite is overpriced, even with the usual DFS type off codes

Yeah, yeah, I bought one of their very high quality exhausts yesterday, which obviously is Timax junk (sorry, Klaurius, due to Timax's bad name, they rebranded) at a premium price (using a code). But I wanted it yesterday.

I'm actually sorely tempted to weld the hanger back on the 17yr old one that came off, and bin the ECP supplied one...

If you want/need to buy anything from ECP then first check their ebay shop where it will always be cheaper than direct from the ECP website, despite the discount codes. You can do a pick up at store. That said ECP are rarely the cheapest source.

Used them in the past, also used Tayna a couple of times recently, no problems either time - just picked whichever one was cheapest for the battery I needed there and then (last time, the giant battery in the BMW .. £170!)

;D Aye - but for an AGM battery (which I hope that was for!) I can see it .. this is just an old fashioned lead acid; albeit a 110Ah one that just about gave me (another) hernia  ;D

just as an additional point.....my battery up to being replaced @ Mar 16 was fitted by vauxhall dealer with a spec. one level below the spec. listed for a 3.2 Elite (the original spec. had been deleted from Vauxhall). Even when it was new it always felt 'tired'.

Got a correct spec. Yuasa Silver battery from The Battery Shop, Swindon with a spec. of 80Ah and 760A and a three year guarantee. With the right spec.it made such a difference - so getting the right ' high numbers' on your battery is worth it.

It's that 760 CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) spec that's important as opposed to the nominal battery capacity. If your old battery was below spec on CCA, even if good on nominal capacity, then you would probably notice a hesitation on cold starts. 760 CCA exceeds the spec of the factory original battery options.

These sit outside the battery tray, no effect as long as the battery fits the tray ;)

These 3
(http://a63.tinypic.com/351s9is.jpg)
Lager then a 72 Ah will not fit in a V6.
A 85Ah is 315mm long and then you must remove this bracket.and there is no support for the connectors any more.
The 2.5 DTI has a different bracket but that will not fit in a V6 because of the water hose and the aircon hose and the pas hose

Ah, understood.

I think mine is 74Ahr, which was the standard on later UK V6s, fitted no issues.  I'd need to double check next time the car is here.

Yes, 74 Ah fits perfectly, but lager not without modifications.

Yes, 74 Ah fits perfectly, but lager not without modifications.
Battery technology has moved on
A battery amp hour rating is NOT the way to decide what battery to fit
you need to select the correct battery type  ;)
type 096 278L x 175W x 190H max
which can be 68Ah or less to 77Ah/780cca (bosch S5) possibly more as battery technology improves  :y
Title: Re: Battery replacement
Post by: Vega on 26 January 2019, 14:11:37
190 mm height will not fit, the fuse box on top of the battery is in the way.
Max height without modification is 175 mm.
So max is a Bosch S5008 or a Varta E38 type batteries

Sorry my mistake, yes you can fit a standard 70/72ah battery and keep the jacket, the original battery fitted on most of my V6's (from the factory) was physically smaller and lower capacity hence I know you can 'upsize'

Bought mine last November from an e-bay seller in Glasgow[they were a bit cheaper than Tayna]for £49.99p delivered. It's an 096 Lion 9000 series 72AH/720CCA,measures 278x175x175.Can't comment about the battery bag as mine has never had one.I see the same seller is now selling the same battery at £69.99p :o

Last battery I bought was for the BMW two and a half years ago from these guys (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Genuine-OEM-Heavy-Duty-Car-Battery-Type-096-100-78ah-4-YEAR-GUARANTEE-24HR/111232380774?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649) and it's still going strong.  :y

Cheap, next day delivery and a 4 year warranty.  :)
