Omega General Help / 1994 Omega x20xev cooling fan constantly on full
« on: 29 December 2022, 15:45:12 »
Girlfriend came home now complaining that her Omega made a strange noise. Quickly found the engine cooling fan running flat out. Outside temp 0C  Engine temp on the dash showed completely normal. Coolant level normal. On disconecting temp sensor on radiator the fan stops. Relay in enginebay relay box clicks when temp sensor gets reconnected. Fan starts up and runs on full as soon as tempsensor is reconnected. Upper radiator hose varm and lower hose cold. Nice warmth in cabin heater. Radiator probably 3 months old.
Are the sensor itself the most likely culprit?

Omega General Help / Crank sensor x20xev
« on: 28 January 2022, 19:54:53 »
One of our Omegas got a bad crank sensor. 1994 x20xev. Paperclipped it and got a code 19. The car is very hard to start and backfires stumbles before it fires up. The problem is i cant seem to find an original crank sensor. Went to Opel and they ordered the only type they had in their system from Germany. The sensor arrived but its the wrong type. The one that Opel says is the only type they can get a hold of is GM 9174621. After doing some research it seems to me that Opel changed the sensor and the engine management around 1996 somtime. I think i need sensor GM 90458251. And that i cant find anywhere. The sensor that now failed is an aftermarket sensor that only lasted 2 years.
Is a Hella sensor my best bet? Hella sensors are available on eBay. And it sounds a bit better than Maxgear and other brands ive never heard of…

General Car Chat / Omega headlight adjusters
« on: 19 January 2022, 06:21:18 »
Changed a headlight adjuster last night on a post 98 halogen hella lamp. Classic case of adjuster broken in half. Took an adjuster from an old broken Depo lamp. The only part on the depo lamp that has better quality than the Hella original in my opinion. All went well. But as i took everything apart i found that i would need to keep the white plastic clip from the hella lamp that grabs on to the reflector. When trying to get the remnants of the black plastic adjuster with the ball on it out from its seat in the white clip the whole black adjuster just basically pulverised in my hands. So i got the parts i needed to rebuild the lamp but i was very surprised of just how brittle the original adjuster was. Where they this crappy from new or is it something that happens with age and heat?

Omega General Help / Preface door trim / moulding
« on: 15 September 2021, 06:22:01 »
Hi. What do people do with the prefacelift side trim pieces? (Those that go on the doors and fenders with chrome strips on them) i have 3 Omegas pfl and all have various problems with these trim pieces. Previously i have just bought new ones whenever one falls of/gets wedged in the door opening but now it seems to be very hard to get hold of them. The problem with these is that the inside of the moulding is untreated metal that at least in our climate in Norway rusts in a couple og years. Then the plastic part falls of.
Have thought about removing the rusted out metal pieces and use some adhesive to attach the plastic piece directly to the door. But unsure to what type of glue is strong enough and also removable if i at any point in the future would want to do that.

Hi. One of our Omegas 1994 model has the old IR remote system where you need to point it at the roof. Car only got central locking. No alarm system. But there is a immobilizer which will only turn off with the remote. The car side of things works fine, but the remotes are the problem. Car has two, but the good one suddenly died a while back. No power/red led. Power reaches circuit board from batteries but nothing happens when button is pushed. The one currently in use had a faulty switch for the main button so that it turns on with just lightly touching it. The consequence is that it is constantly out of power because it activates itself when you carry it around.
Tried getting a functioning second hand one and took it to Opel but they said they couldnt get it coded to the car. They said the remotes had to be new. Cant seem to find new ir remotes for the Omega anywhere.
What are my options here? I know i can deactivate the immobilizer and just use the key, but would like to keep everything working as it should.
Dont really dare to try changing the faulty microswitch on the working remote myself since its the only working remote and if i screw it up im out of options….

Omega General Help / 94 2,0 ABS issues
« on: 20 December 2020, 12:16:28 »
Have had ABS light on for a while now. Was diagnosed at Opel with most likely failed central unit. ABS light would go out after startup and then come on again after the car had moved just a few meters. On closer inspection there was a leak from the servo steering hoses which ended up on the ABS unit. Took the ecu out and found it to show several signs of moisture/corrosion inside.
Ordered a used ABS complete ecu/pump unit from eBay. Numbers on the unit and on the ecu matched. However the new unit came from a a 95 2,5td.
I have just changed the ecu, not the pump and valve unit. On initial startup ABS light went out and came on after a while as before. After that the ABS light just stays on all the time and never goes out.
Will the new ecu need a tech2 since it came from a different engine? Looks identical to the old one.

Omega General Help / 1994 Omega 2,0 ABS tech 1 or tech 2
« on: 23 November 2020, 06:13:28 »
Need to get a code reader on our 1994 Omega 2,0 16v. ABS light goes out on startup but comes back on as soon as the car starts to move. Also i would like to get another infrared remote programmed to the car as it now has just one working remote which is not in great order.
Have read somewhere on here that the early cars requires tech 1. Will a tech 2 work or does it have to be tech 1? Just like to be prepared before i go to the Opel dealer as i think they’re knowledge on older cars as the Omega is not the best.

Omega General Help / ABS light on
« on: 05 October 2020, 17:24:47 »
Car is a 94 omega 2.0 manual. Suddenly the ABS light came on. Light goes out as it should when car is started, but comes on and stays on when the car starts moving. Local garage couldnt get a good reading of the codes as it was an older system they said. But the reader they had indicated a relay fault. Speedo works fine. Next step will probably be to go to Opel and get them to read the codes with tech2. Am i most likely looking at an ecu replacement?

Omega General Help / X20xev cambelt failure?
« on: 27 June 2020, 08:26:02 »
Girlfriend went to work this morning. Phoned me after making it half way there. Had heard a loud «click» from engine bay and the Omega just stopped dead in its tracks. Car wouldnt restart. Drove there myself and found all dashlights working as they should and starter also works. However engine sounds kind of weird when starter runs. Seems to be very low compression. Didnt want to try to much as i dont want to make anything worse.
What puzzled me is that i have had two cambelt failures in the past. (X30xe and Ford pinto engine) both lost all compression and just spun around on the starter without any resistance. This x20xe however seems to have some compression but it seems to spin over to easily.
Could the belt have jumped a tooth? And can the engine then be salvageable? Can the cambelt snap  without engine loosing all compression?

Omega General Help / 97 x20xev no fast idle
« on: 02 June 2020, 15:57:56 »
Ive got a 1997 x20xev estate. Has been running fine until now. When engine cold it will only fire up with som throttle. And when it does fire it dies again without throttle. After revving engine a little bit it idles rough at about 700-800. Once engine been running for a couple of minutes it drives and idles just fine. But no fast idle when cold. Does this sound ICV related or is it something else? Stalling and rough idling is only on cold engine.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / 1994 Omega dead remote
« on: 19 May 2020, 09:15:39 »
The infrared remote on girlfriends Omega suddenly died yesterday. Car wouldnt start because of immobilizer. Had to go home to get spare key to get the car to start. The spare key have a bad microswitch but works. The key she has been using have been in good condition before it suddenly died. Changed batteries two times and even took it apart. 6v gets from the batteries to the circuit board inside the remote but nothing happens. The little red light dont light up and car dont react. All solderjoints look Ok to an amateur. Talked to Opel dealer who said these remotes are no longer available. They also said that remote needs to be new. A used remote from a different car cant be reprogrammed. Parts number on defective remote are 90459461 and 90460834. Both are stamped on it.
The question is do anybody know a place to get a new remote, and is it true that a good used one wont work? As i have previously understood the old infrared system requires Tech 1 to programme.

Omega General Help / 2,0 stumbles
« on: 26 September 2019, 23:01:21 »
Coming home from work tonight the normally very reliable 97 2,0 16v estate had problems. Fired up as normal an ran good the first 3-4 km then it stopped pulling completely and just jerked whenever i applied throttle. Had to be very gentle on the throttle to avoid it stalling. Would barely keep 80 km/h. Also stalled in an intersection when clutch applied. After 10 km of just barely being able to move the eml came on. Just made it home. Paperclipped it and got 0340 camshaft sensor incorrect signal. Would this indicate a bad camshaft sensor or could the code be caused by all tve jerking and stumbling from the engine and the fault might be something else?

Omega General Help / Rear brake shield replacement
« on: 06 June 2019, 09:56:35 »
I’ve got a 94 omega 2,0 where the rear right brake shield is beyond help. The holes where the handbrake shoe pins go through are now roughly a centimeter in diameter due to rust. Also the whole area around there is falling apart. Looked on german eBay and found what seems to be aftermarket shields. Looks the same except the ring where the handbrake shoes rest against seems to be missing on the eBay ones. Are the brake shields two parts, or am i missing something? Car has the old type handbrake where the pins have crossheaded heads and the tip attaches to the back plate. Link to the eBay ones:

Omega General Help / x20xev eml on
« on: 05 April 2019, 23:00:25 »
1994 Omega 2,0 16v eml stayed on one morning, and have been on since. No coming and going just always on. Did the paperclip test and got codes 38 and 91. 38 being a faultcode for the o2 sensor, and 91 being the o2sensors heater element. Have not had much time to look at it yet but was underneath the car and checked the connector for the sensor which looked fine. Also wiring in the area from connector on gearbox to sensor looked intact. Never had this fault before but suspects an o2 sensor fault code can be caused by other things too. But im thinking that the sensor heater fault code would point to either defective wiring or defective sensor? And that the code 38 for the sensor itself is just a result of the heater not working so that the sensor fails its readings due to not reaching operating temperature? Can the heater in the sensor be checked by Ohm meter, and what readings am i looking for?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Light bulb in light switch
« on: 08 March 2019, 07:51:14 »
There is a little light bulb in the back of the main light switch. 12v 0,5w with a small plastic base. Smaller than the instrument lights. Gm90511962. Where do people get hold of this? Cant really find online and the local Opel dealer said it was out of stock in Norway, «local» storage in sweden and main storage in Germany. Is there any other bulbs that fit? Maybe get 0,5w bulb without base and solder it in an old bulb base? Opel dealer send a request for me but im not holding my breath.
