i purchased a product which is a spray cannister . the cannister states its for diesel engines for cleaning the egr & intake, would it be ok to use it on a petrol car. personally i cannot see a reason why not.

That will depend on how it's used.
If it's sprayed in the intake or added to the fuel, I would suggest some intended for a petrol engine.


Actually, the chances of anything like that cleaning an EGR valve are very small, and you would be better off removing the thing and giving it a scrub internally with some paint stripper IF it's dirty. And only IF.

if your going to clean an EGR ,clean as much carbon as you can off using brushes and tools
then, get the valve positioned with the electrical motor up ,so any solvent ,cleaner etc can't run into the electrical parts 
I don't see any reason why a diesel cleaner can't be used ,IF you remove all the residue after 
then a light squirt of 3 in 1 to "lube the shaft "
