Genuine interest or a bargaining tool for renewing his contract with Mercedes?

Hamilton needs to be careful what he  wishes for.

Most of his team mates have been pretty average. The young french boy may give him a shock. :)

His team mates haven't been average. He just makes them look average. Remember Rosberg made Schumacher look very average indeed when they both drove Mercedes. Then Hamilton replaced Schumacher and made Rosberg look average.
Not that long ago Bottas was the next big thing, the future star etc. Then he moved up to race with the big boys and it became apparent he was fast, but couldn't be fast every race weekend over a whole season.
I think its a bargaining tool. Ferrari are shambolic much of the time and he is there to win races and Championships. I could possibly see him driving for them for a year right at the end of his career when he has no more records left to break, but other than that, he would be mad to go there.
However, much depends on the future of Mercedes and Woolff. Both are in a degree of doubt at the moment, and if Woolff leaves or Mercedes announce they are leaving to concentrate on Formula E, then all bets are off for Hamiltons future.

Rosberg didn't look that average when he won the world championship.

And he only won it because Hamilton had more breakdowns than he did that year. He was intelligent enough to realise he got lucky and would never get that lucky again, so immediately retired. He never once beat Hamilton in a straight fight on track.
To me, Hamilton is extremely under valued here in his home country. Outside the UK he is a global superstar.

Yes.....and he was racing against a German who was 104 years old at the time.

Bottas......average.

He won the Championship in 2016. Schumacher retired in 2012.

Try living in Spain. The best driver in the whole world is a guy called Sainz.

It is a very British thing not to be patriotic and talk our guys down. We are unique in that respect.

Why shouldnt he talk to Ferrari?  Might be a better car? Might be more money? Might be less media gigs.

And he's coming towards the end of his career, so if he wants to do the Ferrari thing, he has to soon....

Because he's not talented enough.

I even rate (pre retirement) Shithead Schu higher.

I would like a bit more detail on that claim about his talent. I believe he is so talented he makes winning look easy.
The only drivers I have seen who could be compared with him on talent were Gilles Villeneuve and Senna.
The wins and championships don't tell the whole story as that isn't just about driving talent. His record on poles speaks volumes though. Qualifying is about driving the car as fast as it or the driver can get around the track, and he has no peers when it comes to qualifying.
Plus he very rarely makes any mistakes in any conditions or circumstances.
And as Ive said before, its well known Schuey and his cars were bent as a nine bob note, so we can never tell how talented he was or wasn't. He simply made no attempt to compete within the rules throughout his career. I can only imagine that he, or those around him had some serious dirt on Max Mosley, to be able to get away with the things they did.
Senna begged the Williams team to protest the Benetton, after he followed it around the track in 94. He said there was no doubt whatsoever it had traction control, which was banned at the time. Unfortunately Williams didn't want to rock the boat, and the rest, as they say, is history.
