Omega General Help / Re: Which towbar to fit?
« on: 07 May 2011, 13:03:38 »
I have just fitted a Westfalia detatchable swan neck to my Elite saloon. Apparently they are discontinued but a company I used in Chesterfield got me one from Germany. Fitting was very easy, I did not have to remove the bumper and there is only a small amount of bumper cut out necessary which cannot be seen.
When detached there is nothing visible at all to indicate a tow bar is fitted. I have fitted a 13 pin socket to the plate supplied which is welded to the bracket but I have bent it upwards so that it is still accesible but unseeen.
The kit was quite expensive, a shade off £300 including delivery costs but it is great quality and I am happy with it.  :y

Thanks for the info, I will add it to my very long 'to do' list  :o

Transfer pipe is the coolant transfer pipe. A shiny pipe about 2" in diameter that runs from front to back. You'll know it when u see it you can't miss it. It bends round to the back of the engine 180 degrees. You just need to wangle it round to get it out, once the bolts are out of course

Thanks, I thought it was this one. Looks a pig to get access to the back of the engine.  :(

Am I right in thinking that most of the work on getting the manifold off is best done from underneath the car?  :y

I intend replacing, my blowing, drivers side exhaust manifold gasket in the next week or so and have ordered all the necessary bits from local VX stealers including new studs and nuts.In reallity what is the likelyhood of any of the existing studs shearing when removing them ,as understand that the nut tends to bring the entire stud out with it when undone...is this the majorities experience who have done this job ?

What is the best way to refit new studs...with just 2 nuts and then remove them or with a purpose designed stud socket removal/insertion tool.

What parts do you need? Gasket and new studs and nuts, anything else required?  :y

Finally is it better to fit the new studs with copperslip or should these just go in dry and as tight as reasonable, allowing the new nut to just torque up on them.

Sometimes the studs can snap but not that often. Best way to insert the new studs is to clean the threads inside the head by using a tap with a 1.25 tap, this will clean the threads up nicely and you can put the new studs in by hand. I have just replaced my manifolds with 3.2 manifolds, but brfore I put the new studs in I cleaned the threads up first by using a tap, new studs went in nice and easy. With the new nuts as you tighten them up the studs go in just a bit further. Don't forget to torque the nuts up to 25nm, I tightened mine up to approx 26nm and thats just right. And don't forget to remove the transfer pipe as well otherwise you can't get to the studsHTH

Please clarify, what is the transfer pipe? Got to do the drivers manifold on my old 2.5 soon.  :y

Omega General Help / Re: Dispack change
« on: 21 April 2011, 17:37:33 »
Lie on top of the plenum  :o look down the back of the engine to the right of centre and with the use of a torch you should see it! If you are still struggling follow the HT leads back from the plugs. It is easier with the plenum removed but not essential, I managed to squeeze my dispack out via the 2, 4, 6 side.  :y

Dis pack, HT leads or plugs - could be all or any  :(

Start with the kind offer of the plug leads, once eliminated I would check the plugs as they are easier to do (apart from no. 6  :o).

Similar problem to mine, I ended up replacing all three and still had a slight high end misfire, eventually settled down.

Happy spannering  :y

can you just buy the valve by its own? oh well you learn something new everyday. if not too much trouble can you give me the part number for that valve!  :y

Yes, the valve is available on its own, though the A/C experts might tell you that you need the complete pipe assembly too. andyc found the part number for me for this valve (ie the larger ally valve at the front of the car). I'll see if I can dig the receipt out tomorrow.  :y

My local stealers wanted hundreds of pounds to replace the pipe when I had a leaking valve.  :o :o :o

Valve replaced for a few quid, regassed and sorted.  ;)

Elites generally had alloys as standard however, over several years/owners, may have steels fitted - or vice versa, if it started with steels.

Have a look through the gallery section and see the range of standard alloys.  The ones on mine are factory standard and 235/45-17.

Totally off thread but is there a guide to include pictures of this size in a forum message?  :-[

Omega General Help / Re: Bad touch up job
« on: 17 April 2011, 23:29:13 »
I did this on my 02 Elite. The guy I bought it off, a genuine bloke, complained that the correct colour touch up paint bought from the VX stealer was a lousy match and apologised for the half dozen 'blobs' of paint - not his fault I said. When I carefully rubbed them down with 1200 grade, in most cases there wasn't any stone chip or mark underneath.  :o :o :o

He should have gone to Specsavers, but I was a happy bunny! ;D

If it is touch up paint that has been plastered on top of the scratch you can take it off with fine wet and dry paper, 1200 grade, and then T cut the surface to bring back the shine. You have to be careful not to cut through the lacquer topcoat. If it on a flat panel use the paper on a small block of wood with rounded edges rather than with your fingers then you are less likely to create grooves in the paint.  :y

Omega General Help / Best place to get ATF & filters?
« on: 14 April 2011, 11:33:35 »
Looking to follow recommended 60k interval for ATF and filter change. Can anyone advise where I should be getting the bits from? I have a TC and use Walkers of Selby as a main dealer though local Motor factors are good guys.  :y

Omega General Help / Re: Testing the self levelling pump

Next step is to have a good look at the fuse, worth fitting new one just to be sure.

I have read the pump does tend to almost cease up if not working due to its exposed mounting so again worth removing and giving it a good clean and checking nothing is obstructing its movement.

Sorry but unable to answer question about different pumps across range/years being compatable, but have seen several different part numbers of replacements on fleabay so expect not.

Some stories have a happy ending!
Checked the fuse, it was intact but both prongs looked a little dull / oxidised, cleaned them up and a few minutes later there was the 'delightful' sound of the pump working  ;)

Interestingly, when i disconnected the air line to one of the rear shocks there was a loud hiss of escaping air and then nothing. The pump did not start and there was no air coming through the line. Did the same test on my old Eilte, I know that the self levelling systems works on this - same result.  :-?

No problem...very simple to check ..report back with the conclusion after your investigations.

Did as suggested but no noise of pump working and no air coming through! Next step - further checks including the fuse.
Will the pump off a 98 2.5 fit a 2002 2.6 if required?  :y
