Intermittent horns on Astra Hs
« on: 12 September 2019, 17:07:20 »

I submitted DS06, a twinport Astra H manual petrol, for MOT last month. I watched the test, all was well except the horn did not work. The tester showed me he ws rocking the horn section in the middle of the steering wheel, engine running, but the horn did not work. He finished the test, wandered off to fill in forms. I got in the car, tested, and managed to sound the horn. I could do it on every attempt. I called him back, he tried it, it worked for him too. He passed the car, noting 'horn intermittent'.

I mention it because the second Astra I bought was an MOT failure. It had failed on handbrake, rusty discs, something else, and horn not working. I went to see it and test drive it, and the owner mentioned that the horn was now working normally, as he showed me.

What is it about Astra horns causing them to misbehave at MOT times?

Airbag off and check the contacts for, um, contact and condition.

If you're feeling particularly enthusiastic, you could also test the electrickery ribbons for resistance and continuity  ;)

Try the horn with the lights on.  There was a recall on the astra with intermittent horn, it was down to the CIM module. I think the first fix was the wiring connector to the CIM and then a replacement.
Ive seen a few where a separate button and wiring has installed to fix the issue (not by dealer obviously).

Interesting. What and where is the CIM module?

The CIM, (column integrated module)  is located behind the steering wheel and basically controls the other body ecu's (someone correct me if that's wrong).
Do a search for astra  CIM faults and i'm sure you'll find a better explanation

Googling CIM faults, I find a U-tube video of an Astra H horn working fine with the lights off, but not with the lights on. It then demonstrates how to remove the steering wheel air bag, get to the electronics and clean up the contact pins of the CIM. My son has just arrived in the car in question, and at the moment the horn does work with lights on or off. My other such Astra is no longer in use except as spare parts donor.

Terry, you may as well get petrol and diesel tanks and pumps fitted, so that you can then offer complete garage services. ::) ;D

Check the horn connections, I had one that got pulled out by road debris on the Zaf B (twin horn on that so it just sounded naff in this case)

I think there was a recall for this: something about wiring and steering wheel.
