New key needed... options?

After I proved my manliness and broke the key into three pieces earlier, I need a new one.
 The key blade is intact but the plastic horseshoe piece is broken. Can I take this piece to a key cutting place and get just that replaced? Is the immobiliser chip in that bit or the transponder part?

transponder is in horshoe, but has probably fallen out if you've bust the horseshoe.

Awful feeling it's been washed away in one of the storms I ran inside and hid from. Not helped by being on a gravel driveway...

...I shall go and check out the FAQs for info but what am I looking at for a new usable key? A kidney?

No where near that bad.

When I needed  second key I bought the blade & horseshoe and I also bought the three button fob that it clips onto from Evans Halshaw. Both together were about £80 IIRC. (so blade & horseshoe probably less than £40 :-\)

I then went to that years OOF Lakes meet and got TB to programme it for me :y

Done some digging - the button half is complete and functioning...

...if I get something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNCUT-KEY-BLADE-HEAD-ID40-TRANSPONDER-FOR-VAUXHALL-OPEL-ASTRA-VECTRA-OMEGA-R-/321065227918?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368

then get a key man to cut it for me... then can I pop down to see Mr DTM to have the whole thing programmed? Will only cost £30 in fuel in MrsGKs Lupo :y

If you get the blade from Vauxhall it will already be cut with the correct profile.

The key doesn't require programming - it is the security ECU in the car that gets programmed so MrsGKs Lupo isn't going to be much help.........

Why not source the key blank, cutting, chip and programming at one place? It's only common Vauxhall work.

Why bother getting the key cut if it doesn.t open the door, could be the locks have been swapped or mixed at some point, if it has, probably easier to get a good second hand lock set and keys from somewhere.

Well yea, obviously I appreciate the key worked in the ignition, the point I was on about is the key may or not fit the door, wouldn't be the first time Ive come across an Omega where the Ing Key doesn't work on the doors, because its been swapped out in its previous life, you normally find out when the battery is flat or the fob's packed up.

If it was me, I'd be thinking a couple of steps ahead before buying blank keys or issuing the VX Dealer with my open wallet. The OP has still got the key blade, so that can be investigated further to see whether it fits the door lock or not.

Hopefully its a stick'y lock, if its not, dont think I'd be getting another key cut just for the Ing. probably get the whole set sorted out with a second hand setup.

Ahhhh I had it arse about face, thought it were a case of coding the key using a code from the car pass  :-X

Might be able to transplant the key blade into a spare case, I have one kicking about the garage... will update as and when. :y

If you have a spare horseshoe with transponder still in place then you just need MDTM to program the  ECU to accept it.
