2.0 idling between 1200 to 1800 rpm
« on: 01 April 2007, 18:04:39 »

Hi guys, I have read several posts about this problem and mine is suffering from it. It idles ok when cold and even when temp is normal it's ok, but after about 15 mins of driving the tickover hunts rapidly between 1200 and 1800 rpm. Bit of a pain. I've read about blocked breathers but I can't seem to find the guide on the 2.0. How many pipes are there? I've cleaned the one from the cover to the air intake and replaced the smaller one beside it. Are there any more that will need looking at? I've also cleaned around the butterfly with carb cleaner but it's still the same. Any further advice please?

The 2.0 is similar to the 2.2 guide except it has a throttle cable.

Have you completely removed the throttle body and replaced the gasket?

Have you removed and cleaned the breather pipe from the cam cover to the sump?

Does the butterfly completely close?

It not, lubricate with a tiny drop of 3:1 after making sure it is really clean.

Check the throttle cable adjustment, make sure it's not sticking and opening the butterfly.

What he said.  Do use 3in1 oil, not WD40. :y

No, I have not completely removed the throttle body, do I need to?  Is the cam to sump breather the one at the back of the engine with a black box that joins to a metal pipe? Sorry, I can't find the 2.2 guide, could you point me in the right direction please!?
Sorry, this isn't an April fool, I'm no mechanic, just a keen amateur.

I have the same problem, which started after I cleaned my breathers >:( >:( Still have yet to take it apart again.

One thing you may have missed is the metal nozzle under the throttle that the small bore pipe connects too.  Mine was solid -I ended up unscrewing it and using a small twist drill (per suggestion somewhere on here).

If you discover the cause, please let me know - I will do likewise :y

AutoAddict - I didn't change the gasket as it looked fine (or the ICV one either).  Is this needed?

Cheers

I'd suggest cleaning ICV... Personally i think that it is because piston rings are already not as good as they used to be and there is more oil dust in carter gases that result in more often breathers and ICV cleaning...

This is the maintenance guide for a 2.2, 2.0 very similar except it has a throttle cable and no electrics to dismantle.

You need the throttle body off fully to do this job.......as you need to clean the base of the disc etc to....

You DO need new gaskets (throttle body to inlet and idle valve to throttle body)....they cost only a few quid any way....its the only way you can guarantee no air leaks...

Once the throttle body is fully cleaned and all the drillings are clear......check the throttle butterfly is fully shut....its a common bodge for mechanics to wind the throttle stop to overcome idle issues....

BTW - how do you get to the pipe that goes down at the rear nearside of the engine? Do you remove it and if so how on earth do you get access?

With great difficulty on a 2.0, you need a thin arm and a rubber wrist.

Did my mates a while back, it was the longest part of the job.

A rachet spanner helps.

I'm hoping to have a go at the rear breather tomorrow, but the b@st@rd bonnet fell on my right hand yesterday and its swelled up to twice the size, so how i'm gonna slide it down the side of the exhaust God knows!!

Although not Ideal

Last time I did mine I put mine up on ramps gave me plenty of access, but be sure that the car exhaust is cold as the CAT does get very hot as access to the rear breather is close to the CAT downpipe.

Saves on removing the manifold heatshield.

Well, I've removed and cleaned the rear breather pipe and fitted a new gasket. It made no difference, so I removed the throttle body, cleaned it, cleaned the ICV and replaced all gaskets. Still same symptoms.
On tickover it is just as though I am sitting with my foot on the throttle increasing the revs between 1200 and 1800 at around 1 second intervals.
Any more ideas please guys?

Ive just done mine today, I have a rubber wrist and a thin arm its just what you need.

Mine used to do the same over rev not all the time but when it wanted to.
I cleaned the breather and boy did it need cleaning. I cant give mine a test run as no mot at the moment but it does seem better. Next will be the ICV with plenty of carb cleaner, keep at it m8 all will be fine in the end.

Only another 112 jobs to go. Ha ha. I need a nervous breakdown now will update soon.
