Stopped
« on: 15 April 2007, 18:30:55 »

Hi All,  After a nice run round this afternoon, I was on the last straight before home doing about 30 and the engine just stopped. Pulled over and it started again straight away no problem. There was no misfiring or rough running, it just cut out. I've done the paperclip test and the only code logged is 0340 which I beleive is the Camshaft sensor. In the guide I have it says that you should have the engine running when testing, but the EM light would not flash when I started the car, only with the ignition on. Is this normal? Also, could the camshaft sensor code be displaying because the engine was not running when tested?

Cannot run engine when doing paperclip test on 2.0l.

0340 is cam sensor, and will require changing.  Unusual for it to kill the engine, but not unheard of - the 4 pots do some weird things....

Hi

Are you sure you've read the code correctly?

P0340 is camshaft sensor.....but for a Simtec ECU

I think a 1997 2.0 will have a Motronic ECU in it.....P0340 doesnt exist for this ECU

Unless its for a different Omega than your profile states.

I stand corrected!  :y

For some reason if i select any of the 3 choices for the 2.0L engine, it always pulls up motronic ecu (Tho i had missed the 2.5 3.0 next to it  :-[ )

Thanks for the replies guys - I've had another look around and there is a taped joint in the wire leading to the sensor. It is about 6 inches from the cam cover. Should this connection be there or do you think it may be a previous bodge? Also, is it normal for these sensors to go intermittently faulty?
Thanks.

The cam sensors on the 2.0/2.2 are troublesome....   ...ask Taxi Driver or Auto Addict ;)

Any idea how much I should pay for a cam sensor?
Thanks to this forum I'd got the GLS running like a dream and I've even treated her to some CDX alloys with Michelin tyres off eBay (not as nice as the GLS wheels I don't think, but better tyres!). I was driving around like a millionaire in my £200 car and then she does this!!  Still.. could be a lot worse!

Hi there softon, I have a p (96) reg 2.0 gls, and had this prob, but also had other simptoms that turned out to be the crank sensor.  But I also changed the cam sensor, there is a mod on the new ones that ment you had to solder wires to existing loom, which is what I guess is taped up on your wir'ing loom. You can take this tape off to see if it has been soldered or just twisted, thay should be soldered. I hope this helps. Changing the cam sensor is easy job, its the crank sensor thats a bitch.

Thanks to all for the info.  The cam sensor was changed about 2 years (20,000 miles) ago by main dealer, that probably accounts for the wire join. I'll take the tape off and check the connexion later today. Car running perfectly at the moment so i'll see what happens.
