Overfilling your tank?!
« on: 22 June 2019, 00:40:37 »

So here's a new thing (always learning)...

'brimming' your tank by giving it a click 'for luck' can damage your carbon canister evap system on modern cars...

So how common knowledge is this? And if you have, how serious is it - have 'stuffed' your evap system irreperably?  :-[ ???

has anyone ever replaced a carbon canister or even given it a second thought ?
unless they throw a code for evap purge leak  ;D

I never brim a tank
usually put half a tank in my omega 40 or 50 quid depending on how low it is.
my old mum keeps her tank full and hardly ever goes anywhere  ::)
I have to ban her putting petrol in in march so it has fresh fuel for mot ,in June  :D

As a (ex)motorcyclist, I always stop at first cutoff, unless I don't believe it.  An old habit from the old days when overfilling a transit just meant it all came out at the first roundabout.

I always brim a car when I fill it & then to the next £pound (50p for Smarts) .... never had a problem apart from when the so call Smart specialist replaced the fuel pump/sender & reused the old seal & it leaked.  :-X
It does hurt when a ML costs over £100 to fill from the instant the light comes on   ???

This is non-omega, just to clarify. It just surprised me, soon as I start googling there's a ton of info about the dangers of doing it, you'll knacker your canister, cause massive garage bills etc.

And yes the evap warning light is now on! Hope if there's any contamination in the canister it'll evaporate off in time...

You're not.
But it really isn't important to how you use the car. Any car.

It doesn't... So long as you don't contaminate the filter with petrol... Then you get worried you've buggered a car that's been back from the garage less than an hour!

I just hope it'll sort itself out, the petrol will evaporate, like I say...  :-\

You know that it's supposed to be a sealed system, that vents into the engine's intake(when that's running)?
It isn't like an old car where the tank vent was a length of fuel pipe that ran up the roof pillar, turned through 180degrees, back down the pillar and emptied onto the ground

Obviously, currently, I can't brim cars due to the £99 limit at pay at pump.  They need to raise that.

Ta Nick, so if petrol has got into the canister - will it 'sort itself out' or does it need taking out and purging/blowing out, then?  :-\

How would it have got into the canister? They're usually right in the top of the tank, with somesort of valve that only allows them to work with the engine running. You'll have fuel gushing out of the filler neck and not have a problem with the evap system.

You would be far better worrying about the condition of the fuel filter.
