Kids in cave
« on: 03 July 2018, 20:33:49 »

I see they've found the kids trapped in the cave in Thailand, all seem safe and well  :y especially considering it took 10days to find them.Food/water etc is being taken in to them with the apparent choices of teaching them to scuba dive and get them out that way or leave them there[and keep pumping the flood waters out]until after the monsoon season[due to last until September :o]and walk them out.Hopefully whichever way they do it the outcome will be a happy one :y :y

I was amazed they found them alive and well. Its going to be tricky getting them out though. They must be very relieved to have made contact with the outside world though.

Caving? What possesses people?

I wonder how many will ever go back when/if they get out?

Yes, and these kids apparently went there after football training, parking their bicycles up, and "just decided" to go down into the caves with their coach!! :o :o :o

How different cultures / peoples calculate risk eh?!! ::) ::) ;)

Apparently they are going to teach them how to dive. Teaching footballers how to dive, oh the irony. You would have thought they could have just used the sub. (I'll get my coat)

Can’t they drill down through the mountain to where they are. There was some great equipment on curse of oak island for that sort of venture or would it be too hard to get the gear up there perhaps?

Apparently the approach used by the divers to reach them means navigating a bend in the tunnel giving access to one person at a time and they're on about drilling this to widen it and make it easier/safer to get the kids out.

Good luck with that one  :-\

As a Diver myself, it is kind of doable to train a novice to a a safe and monitored dive within a few hours, otherwise your looking at weeks if not months of training and experience for a driver to become fully competent in a panic or emergency situation, then add that to Cave diving, Cold Fresh Water, Murky and claustrophobic and tight conditions.  Hmm, difficult one that.   :-\

Plus, it has been said, there is a section of the approach to the boys cave, which took professional divers 6 hours to travel, that is impassible with standard air tanks on your back.

The experts on site are working out if they can widen this section, which carries significant risk

I've done a fair bit of recreational diving and have been in some tight enclosed spots when wreck diving.  I just can't think it will end well trying to teach these kids to dive and then pretty much their first dive will be an extremely challenging dive that even the experts find difficult.  :-\

They do its called the Mole, apparently you can train Thai Monkys to operate it, not sure how big the Cave is thought, the Kids could end up as Chop Suey if they get it wrong.  ;D

Yep agreed, you could decide to take them out one by one and hope for a high success rate, or just take the plunge and do them in batches and await the mass panic half way through the journey.  :(

Drill down from the top to the cave ceiling?

Or send in a team of ex-Welsh miners to create a tunnel :D ;)

Seriously though, any option like drilling or mining down will be seriously risky.  I don't know what the geology is like in those parts, but collapsing tunnels, or the very cave the boys are in must be a real risk.

They need a tough boy sized water tight pod with it's own air supply that can be pulled through the tunnels.  ;)

As I understand it though some of these tunnels are an extremely tight squeeze to get through.  :-\

The weather has been pretty kind to them and they've managed to lower the water level by a reasonable amount[comparatively speaking]but nowhere near enough and if the weather turns then they're back to fighting the tide.Current thinking seems to be that if they go for getting them out now/soon rather than leaving them until after monsoon season then they'll bring them one at a time starting with the strongest first.

The media actually quoted the case of the Seal diver who went to the cave first with supplies setting off at 0500 and arriving at 1100; so 6 hours.

So with the death that has sadly happened, it emphasis how difficult ( impossible??) it will be to get the boys out using this route. :(

As I said earlier there is equipment that can bore through from above albeit maybe too hard to get it there or maybe the distance to drill maybe too deep. Haven’t heard anybody mention this on the news but time is running out and it’s going to get harder as time goes on weather is against them.

Yes the BBC reported that a "hole" was being dug, and they had got 400 metres down, but they needed get to 600 mtrs.  What all that meant I don't know and it has not been mentioned again ;)

Just found this on the BBC website:

Meanwhile, rescuers outside the cave have dug more than 100 holes in an attempt to reach the cave by a direct route. There were 18 promising ones, the deepest at 400m, but Mr Narongsak said he was not sure if it would reach the boys, who are believed to be about 600m below the surface.

Full details with diagram:

Water levels have reportedly been lowered to nearly enough to make it a do-able proposition to get them out that way, however more rain is forecast for the area today which could take things back to square one.Meanwhile oxygen levels have been increased in the cave by the divers taking in tanks of it and communications cabling is being taken in so direct contact can be made both by the rescue team and families with the kids.Fingers[and everything else crossed here that a successful outcome can be and is achieved.

The big worry was the return of the rain re-filling the cave system and undoing all the work they've done pumping it out. They've built dams to try holding/diverting the rain water away from re-flooding the cave and as forecast/expected the rain has returned. It seems a race against time/the elements to get them out.Hopefully success will crown their endeavours.

Full details with diagram:

https://bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-44748924

I would assume where they don't know the exact location of the cave that they have drilled 100 small test holes to try and reach the cave and if they succeed they will then drill a hole big enough to bring them out.

iirc Underground structures are very difficult to detect without using explosive charges and recording the sound wave reflections. In these circumstances such techniques are clearly inappropriate.

A bit strange that they're being quarantined as they are being brought out...

Good that they are making progress though :y Fingers crossed that they all make it out in one piece.

I believe TB that they went in through the main entrance tunnel which at some point afterwards caved in blocking further entry/exit and the route they're now using is/was the only route left available to reach and extricate them.

At least the authorities are taking sensible precautions over the health of the kids and the wider community.Although I believe the many requests for chocolate that the kids have made have so far been refused while their diet is carefully monitored at this stage.Operation is underway to bring out the last 4 kids and their coach. Here's hoping :y

Fortune favours the brave-so the saying goes.Fair play to all involved in the rescue effort, they weighed up their[limited]options, decided on a course of action and went all out with it.Unfortunately one poor soul lost his life which is to be deeply regretted, but to gain the result they did is nothing short of amazing and although they didn't do it for that purpose I hope some sort of reward/accolade is awarded to them.Meanwhile who holds the film rights :D ;D

Yes! :y  It shows the very best side of human nature and how man rises to a challenge, overcoming all odds and achieving the so called impossible.

Still cannot stop smiling and feeling so pleased about this 8) 8) 8) ;)

All the kids have been discharged from hospital and-after a press conference with carefully vetted questions-have gone home to their families :y As I expected there is already talk of a film being made, although how they'll sneak a woman[for the "love interest"]into the plot I don't know :D.Although it could be argued that the team coach shouldn't have taken them into the cave in the first place[he was inside the date/time parameters set by the authorities]he appears to have acquitted himself very well teaching the kids meditation to take their minds off their hunger, keeping up their morale and belief in their ultimate rescue. To keep them further occupied he had them making holes to keep the water level down although how effective this actually was is open to debate but it kept them busy with less time to brood over their predicament.
