General Car Chat / Re: Understanding DPF issues
« on: 19 February 2024, 13:37:39 »
The 2.0 CDTi glow plugs also monitor the cylinder pressures, I suspect a faulty one would show a low compression fault code and might also cause a change in the idle. It sounds like this is a confirmed issue given the codes and the fact the cylinder pressure is measured as good so the first job should be to repair this.

DPF regen gets inhibited when many engine faults are active, this is done to protect the system/engine from overheating or bore wash during the active regen phase.

So change the glow plug, ensure the codes are cleared, check the live data to confirm cylinder pressures are good, and go for a good drive to regen the DPF (forces regen should be avoided if possible!), if it does not regen then do a forced one.

Not rocket surgery but, we all know how to many mechanics struggle with the basics these days

Thank you - glo plug changed and all good so far. Just a bit of a long way round to get there. I suppose with hindsight and knowing that only part of the glo plug will throw a code pointing to the glo plug then it would have been  an idea to swap a glo plug over from a cylinder which was not exhibiting a pressure issue. Anyhow - job done now.

Thanks guys - glo plug pressure sensor was the problem.
Basically the glo plug part was working but the pressure sensor part of it was faulty- hence it did not throw a glo plug code but because there was a fault in the system the regen would not work. All seems good and forced regen worked.

General Car Chat / Understanding DPF issues
« on: 17 February 2024, 10:01:37 »
Hi all - not had too many car issues in recent years but just hoping to get a bit of a strange one sorted today.

The Insignia 2.0 diesel auto (2012 93000 miles) has variable revs when at idle which has gone a little worse over last 3 weeks so that you now get a slight hesitation - again only noticeable at idle. The DPF warning came up just before this (say 4 weeks ago) so we gave it a run but haven't done any longish runs since. Took it to independent yesterday who read codes and showing DPF 86% blocked and cylinder low pressure. As they could not do forced regeneration they asked my permission to do cylinder leak test to which I agreed and later in day they came back with no issues and that the fault appears to be one glo-plug (type which has pressure sensor). I had googled all of this and Insignia sites have a lot of posts where this idling issue is prevalent - some have changed loads of parts, others ignore it.

Hoping today brings result but not sure why diagnostic wouldn't go straight to glo-plug fault?

What I didn't buy into was the Martin Lewis and other's advice not to do fixes back in autumn last year as the cap was lower than the price fixes offered by the companies. Yes I paid slightly more but the fixes out to the end of 2023 are significantly cheaper than the road we are on now. I suppose the view at the time from the pundits was that energy prices would have come down by now but there was no certainty on this even ignoring Ukraine/Russia.

Several years ago  just before New Year  the Omega broke down near to Cribbs Corner on the M5 about 11am on the way from seeing family in Cornwall  to seeing family in Manchester. Phoned the AA who sent a subcontractor vehicle fairly quickly whilst we cowered behind a barrier. He said he could organise a car for our onward journey and get the car to a nominated destination. The AA overrode his recommendation and he had to take us to Gordano Services for us to await another patrol. Once at Gordano we were there about 3 or 4 hours when a patrol turned up incapable of towing the Omega anywhere. We decided we would return home to Sandhurst and about 5pm a truck took us to Leigh Delamere Services where we had to await another truck. This one took us to Chieveley - now about  midnight. The AA then organised a taxi for us from Membury to Sandhurst and asked us to leave keys to Omega on front wheel. We got home about 1am and Omega turned up the following day after being in a compound somewhere.

I used Groupon / ATS for 3 cars in last month. Seems to be good.

so - 3/4  weeks on - all fine in terms of air con, starting and no erratic rev counter etc but the service esp light has been on twice and disappears on restart.

This may possibly be the same issue as Tunnie had with Zafira in 2018 being a broken pick up washer on the hub I think. Will get codes read in next few days but would not think plugs or coil pack at this stage due to fact that after restart  it drives ok.

General Car Chat / AirCon regas frequency
« on: 26 August 2022, 09:48:24 »
I could not recall the Insignia ever having been regassed - went through bills etc - nothing. It is now 11 years old and AC working fine. Decided to have it done - they recovered 525g refrigerant but only 3g of oil. It took 600g  refrigerant and 13g oil. At 3g oil then it must have been close to leading to compressor damage. AC is running all the time which is apparently best for refrigerant efficiency. So waiting for car to stop blowing cold air as a decider  for regas may not be the best policy?

If all else fails try TheAutoLocksmith - 0800 158 3798 - says they cover the home counties - no doubt pricey

Bad alternators seem to be able to manifest themselves in many ways but would high revving at idle as opposed to low revs /cutting out (which seems more the norm for an alternator issue) be a sign when coupled with other electrical issues?

It depends on the ECU. I don't know if your ECU does it, but, ECU's do monitor battery voltage. They also control idle speed (via the idle air control valve). Normally idle speed is mostly dependent on engine temperature - so on a cold engine it'll be 1000+ rpm, and then as the engine warms up it slowly reduced to 600RPM ish. However, it's entirely possible that your ECU also has a mode where it increases RPM if it detects low battery voltage, in order to increase the charging current generated by the alternator. If it's actually the alternator that's faulty, then battery voltage may never increase, so you get permanently high idle speed.

ECU's also often increase idle RPM when A/C is enabled - to compensate for the extra load the A/C compressor puts on the engine.

I don't know if the Ashtray ECU does any of these things, but it is at least possible, and could explain what was going on.

Thanks for this interesting perspective - seems logical if my ecu would behave in this way in the event of a failing alternator. I may get a chance to pose the question to Eden and VX as a "case file" - has been opened.

Astra still driving fine with ac on and absolutely no issues after nearly a week. Eden maintain that it could not be that as the engine was revving erratically when they had it. They gave me so much bullshit as to why they could not diagnose. Independent Auto Electrician was adamant from get go that it was the alternator.

It appears to be fixed, Phil. Personally, I wouldn't worry about the whys and wherefores.

cheers Steve - I want my diagnostic fee back and some beer money.

New WAI alternator seems to have fixed everything. Driving it all afternoon and no problems. He will recheck battery performance on Monday as it must have been drained after events of past 2 weeks so maybe no need to replace. Eden are just a joke. They told me 2 weeks ago alternator was fine despite AA saying that was most likely culprit

Well Vauxhall and Eden were of tremendous help. They said they were completely stumped and could only recommend a change of a control unit at a cost of £2000 but would not guarantee that this would be a fix. Terrible customer service. Took car away and it is now with a local auto electrician who believes it is the alternator and possibly battery as well. His meter showed replace battery but also alternator not delivering enough power. Hope to know more tomorrow.
