Omega General Help / hose left over after coil pack change

I have just changed coil pack. After replacing leads, plenum, etc. I have a spare vacuum(?) hose. You see it in the picture resting on the coolant hoses in the foreground. What is it? Where should it go?

This car has a noise from rear nearside. Silent on starting, builds up with miles, varies only with speed, not power, braking or cornering. Reading old threads it sounds like wheel bearing, and horrendously difficult to change. I have changed front hubs complete with bearings and ABS sensors several times. Is changing the rear suspension arms similarly attractive? There is a guy in C. Tyrone saying so, and offering such an arm for £20 (though not an estate arm).

Are arms easy to change?

X84GNB 2.5 petrol estate manual
2 weeks ago car failed to start. Bought pattern crank sensor, fitted, it ran fine. Friday 13th heavy rain, after 40 miles drive stopped for driver relief, restarted, engine misfiring. Hoped it would dry out and recover, never did. Got it home all right. Concluded it was pattern crank sensor, yesterday bought genuine Vx Siemens sensor, fitted this morning. Still misfiring. Have checked  plug holes 5 and 6, both bone dry.

Any ideas? EML has never come on. I suppose it could be plug leads or coil pack, but it happened after a brief stop in heavy rain.

Omega General Help / Failed crank sensor - cable or sensor?
« on: 11 December 2013, 19:20:25 »

I have changed the crankshaft position sensor on above car, and cured its failure to start. Thanks to all for their good advice.

I have read on this forum ( I think) that what fails is the cable, not the sensor. I thought I could replace the cable. So I stripped off the insulation from either end of the cable and tested for continuity. I discovered: from socket to wires near socket - 3 wires continuous; socket to sensor end wires- continuity from socket all 3 wires. So cable is OK. Cable to sensor is more puzzling. There are three wires, naked copper, white insulated and black insulated. Between naked copper and the other two there is open circuit. Between black and white insulated there is 600 ohms. So sensor seems OK too. But car would not start using this sensor. A new crank sensor cured the fault. I am perplexed.

Omega General Help / Using my Omega as an emergency generator
« on: 08 December 2013, 13:07:04 »
Gentlemen, just an idle thought. In cases of power cuts, I should like an emergency power supply. I know I can but Honda or Chinese generator units giving a few kilowatts, that',s no good. I want something cheap but available when needed. What I have in mind is a 10 kilowatt generator I can bolt some where on my Omega engine and a longer auxiliary belt enabling me to use my Omega as a generator. I should leave it in the garage. Output has to be 240 volts AC, 50cyles per second, like the mains.

Then all I need do is switch off the mains supply at the incoming fuse box, fix my generator to my Omega and plug a garage socket, and the house has power again.

Probably infringes some regulations, and need care. But all it needs is the mounting for the generator and a belt.

Has anyone ever done this?

Engine cranks well but does not start. My first thought was failed crank sensor. Then I loosened a fuel pipe to check fuel feed when cranking, and found there was none. There is fuel in the tank.

I know there is a relay, but do  not know where. Is there a fuse? Perhaps the pump has failed.

Please advise procedure to isolate fault.

Omega General Help / headlight restoration kit
« on: 24 November 2013, 12:39:58 »
Browsing through Machine Mart catalogue for presents for my family to give me, I found p.275 a headlight and tail light restoration kit. Has anyone experience of this, is it any good? If I am not allowed to ask this sort of question, please tell me.

Rear box gone, eternalcar unhelpful. I have a good complete PFL saloon system but no remaining PFL saloons. Will the rear silencer fit?

Omega General Help / Is eternalcar still doing Omega exhausts?
« on: 19 November 2013, 22:40:27 »
I have spent half an hour trying to order a new exhaust for my 1998 estate, to no avail. It kept coming back '0 items found'. I have found their website difficult before. Is there a trick, or must I look elsewhere?

OE03EWW 3.2 petrol manual saloon
I have just changed the thermostat. On refilling with coolant and starting engine, there is no heat in the cabin. Have set climate controls to HI both sides, but no heat comes out. The vacuum line to HBV is still attached. Do I need to bleed something?

477
I have noticed before a few Vx bolts are not magnetic. I noticed today the thermostat bolts are not. I wonder why.

OE03EWW 2003 3.2 petrol manual saloon
I am changing the thermostat. I have removed plenum, inlet manifold and black spacer piece. I have remove the power steering reservoir, moved pipes out of the way, and removed the B-bolt. I have dropped the bracket that holds the dip stick (bother), and removed the lifting bracket from behind transfer pipe flange. I cannot move transfer pipe, and am obstructed by dip stick tube. I have not yet removed the two bolts holding down the thermostat. I am stuck.

Should I remove thermostat bolts?
Should I struggle to remove dip stick?
Should I apply more force to transfer pipe flange?

Please advise.

OE03EWW 2003 petrol manual 3.2 saloon
This car never gets really hot, chilly in winter. I changed a thermostat on a 1999 3.0 6 years ago, made hard work of it so left this 3.2. Having recently changed the exhaust manifold on my 2.5 I am more confident of removing the inlet manifold, having done it a several times. Apart from a new thermostat and transfer pipe with O rings, and antifreeze, is there anything else I might need?

Omega General Help / Low oil warning light on, but oil level fine
« on: 03 November 2013, 19:41:02 »
V324DTO 2000 2.5 manual petrol saloon
This car is home for MOT test. Unless the oil is right at the top of the dip stick the low oil check message come on. I trust the dip stick rather than the warning message. I am afraid my daughter (it's her car) will overfill it, causing frothing and breather trouble. Can I adjust the warning light level?
