A question for 2.2 petrol owners.
« on: 16 June 2012, 05:45:26 »

I've noticed in the pictures I've seen of the 2.2 engine, there's been another modification made to the breather system. I have a '99 2.0 Ecotec and the breather consists of a short rubber hose coming off the right rear of the cam cover, then a black metal guaze filled box, with another hose underneath joining it to a metal pipe.
On the pics I've seen of the 2.2, it's just one hose which comes off the cam cover to the metal pipe. Is there anything inside the rubber hose or is it just a normal L shaped piece of rubber pipe?
This seems a much better setup to me, as the black box breather is a bugger to get off and keep clean.

That is a flame trap, aids breathing I beleive.

I fitted one to our old 2.2

Thanks for that Jimbob.
If the flametrap is an improvement, I'll leave it alone.
It's just that, when I got the car, this 'box' obviously hadn't been cleaned out for many moons.
The metal guaze inside was like concrete. I thought a straight run of hose might make the car breathe easier.

I managed to clean it out ok, took a whole can of cleaner though. I think with it being blocked, it has caused some oil leaks. Must investigate those.

Mine is a 2000....2.2 and just has a piece of hose which i just replaced because it perished...nothing inside the hose at all and that is how it was as from new........i had a 1998 vectra with just a hose and i bought a black box breather and cut the hose to fit it between as it was meant to improve the breathing..however made no difference at all...
