Intermittent Speedo
« on: 25 July 2015, 09:28:18 »

My speedo has decided to only work part time, choosing the most inopportune moments to stop working.

I`m thinking it will be the signal sender unit or wiring at fault, is the sender unit on the gearbox or is it related to the ABS/traction control system?

Yep, all of them, well ABS actually, normally a good bash with your fist on top of the dash works, if not take the clock housing out and refit it making sure the push fit connections are seat properly before you start ripping your engine bay apart.  ;)

Cheers Zirk, I`ll try that next time, it`s been behaving itself since this mornings trip past eight speed cameras.

Do MID functions relying on speed (eg, consumption) go haywire at same time?

No, it`s only the speedo TB, it`ll stop working and then just start working again, there doesn`t seem to be any time or anything in particular, it`s just random.

It`s done it about three times in the last week now.

Right a bit more info on this, it happened again on the way to Manchester airport on Friday twice, both times it happened it started working again within a couple of minutes.
When it stops working the speedo needle drops back to zero about 1-2 seconds later TC and ABS lights come on and all the speed related functions on the MID aren`t working then when it starts working again the speedo needle springs back into action, 1-2 seconds later the TC and ABS lights come on and then all the MID speed related functions are working again.

It seems to me that it`s not a dash problem unless the MID gets its speed signal from the dash, but whatever generates the speed signal.

With TC and ABS light coming on does sound like the ABS ECU (and or Pump) as the ECU unit is easier to change than the whole unit I would start with that, you could try unplugging the connector and re connect as few times and checking its clean from grease, oil etc but to be honest getting access to it is a bit of a pain, so while your there change the ECU.
