Rear Shock Top Mounts
« on: 01 August 2015, 23:57:02 »

Been searching, can't find thread with rear shock top mount bush details.

Got the 2.2 in the air today, took bottom bolt off the shock. Pushing it up, the shock returns smoothly in one motion. So shock is fine, fair bit of movement at the top, can wiggle top end of the shock about a fair bit. So as per suggestions, shock mounts have failed.

Guess GM only for these?

Because of one thing after another, only just got around to calling the Vx dealer.

Getting more noticeable now, so decided to call local Camberley dealer as getting to Heathrow one does prove an issue at the moment.

Told catalogue does not recognise part '90468511'

Told I need part 90487540, which is the 'kit' of which I need two, price each (retail) is £19+ vat.

Is that right?  :-\

This is what they are looking to sell you...

This is correct IF AND ONLY IF the car has genuine GM shocks.

If it has B4s then you need to give the parts bloke OU54AEW as the reg in order to get the estate parts :y. These aren't available as a kit... hence this list...

90447244 Cup x 4 £2.40 (washer, four required, saloon and estate)
90250288 Rubber Bumper x 2 £3.97 (top mount upper rubber, two required, saloon and estate)
90447245 Insulation x 2 £3.14 (top mount lower rubber, two required, estate only, saloon one is different)
90447246 Spacer Sleeve x 2 £2.49 (fits inside top mount lower rubber, two required, estate onlon one is different p/n matched to 90447245)

Yes, I've genuine shocks  :y

So 90487540 it is then for me?  :)

I can't remember when I fitted the shocks if they came with the kit at the time, I think I replaced just the shock.  :-\

If so kit has lasted well!

Can anyone confirm the trade price on these? I'm really struggling to find time to get to Heathrow before the close these days, which means trade prices. Local one is much, much easier to get to as I can pop the on the weekend, but no trade prices.  :(

£19 a side isn't bad ;) The estate 'kit' is north of £45 if you're unlucky...

Ordered. Plus some door strap bushes.

Now, if I can find the time to fit them at the weekend, all will be good.  :)

A genuine 10 minute job if ever there was :y

(Unless of course you find signs of corrosion, in which case it might take a bit longer to clean/underseal/overcoat... fingers crossed).

Given the age of the car, rust in other areas I'd expect there to be some  :-\

Job for Sunday hopefully, as I hope to take my time on it. Coating shock bolts all those years ago in copper slip payed itself back. When inspecting it all came away nice and easy  :)

Hardest bit is jacking the rear, I always find it a faff having to use the little jack instead of the the proper one. Due to the space issue of fitting a stand, but get there eventually.

If there is corrosion, is a wire bush clean up along with some of this enough?

Attack with manual wire bush enough? Worth getting some attachments for a drill to really polish it up? Then slap the above on?  :-\

I used a stiff brush to clean all the muck off, then a wire brush on the rusty looking bits. If they're bad, a 3" wire wheel in a drill is the perfect size for the shock mount...

I then follow it with a smothering of...

Overcoated with matt black from a rattle can :y
