Revs are strady at around 800rpm. Running fine at the moment - till next time!
Is it usual, when a head gasket is failing, to get symptoms only some of the time?

Another symptom I've had over the last few weeks - don't know if it's related - Car always starts first turn, but sometimes afer pulling away if feels like it's only running on 3 cylinders. This clears itself afer about half a mile. Doesn't do it everytime though.

I cleaned all the breathers out last year, around 8,000 miles ago.  Did an oil change 200 miles ago (VX semi synth oil).
The engine management light did not come on at all. Do I still need to do paperclip test?

It has been using water, but very little since warmer weather with heater on cold. Thought I might have leak on heater matrix but no external sign of leaks.

Omega General Help / 2.0 Head gasket?
« on: 29 June 2008, 16:59:05 »
Hi all.
Driving uphill this afternoon and all of a sudden got rattle from engine, started running rough and lots of whie smoke from exhaust. Had to continue driving as there was nowhere safe to stop. Then smoke disappeared and engine started running ok again. Drove home (2 miles) carefully with no problem. Car now starts and runs ok. Is this likely to be the head gasket, and if so is it a reasonable diy job? (cost?.) Or would I be better off taking advantage of the high scrap metal value at the moment?! (what does an omega weigh?). seems a shame as it has just passed its mot with very little work. Any advice would be appreciated.
Al.

Its a rare failure so a second hand motor is a viable option.

I suspect it occurs as a result of the scuttle drain getting blocked and the water damaging the motor bearings.

Not to hard to change....just pop the glove box to get better access.

Thanks m8. I'll give it a go at the weekend.

Hi, Anyone help with the heater fan problem please?
Is it an easy repair, or am I likely to want a new motor?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Omega General Help / Noisy heater fan
« on: 09 December 2007, 15:44:20 »
Well, after buying the Omega in April and after sorting out the rough running (whith lots of help from you guys!), I can honestly say it has been no trouble since. It flew through the MOT in July with just an advise.
Anyway, the heater blower has always been very noisy (motor bearings?), and now it's getting more use it's starting to get on my nerves! Could anyone give me some advice as to how to get to it, and if it is an easy repair?
Thanks.

Omega General Help / Re: Nasty noise

Could it possibly be the aircon compressor. Mine went and it made a hell of a noise, metallic grinding sound. on closer inspection I could see metal filings underneath the pump. I think the compressor clutch was sh@gged.

no problem there, just clean the idle control valve and breathers. Should sort it out.

Link does not work though...

Worked for me on my 97p 2.0 gls. Running like a dream now. Just cleaned out all breathers, ICV and throttle body, then adjusted butterfly.

Is it worth comparing engine number off the block with the one on the log book?

Could someone please tell me whereabouts the engine number is located?

Yes, when I got the car the drive belt went around the compressor.  I changed it to a shorter one when the noise appeared. I think the compressor is Kn@ckered though as I can see metal filings underneath it.
