Surely the answer to the question "Are these people working voluntarily?" has to be filed under "No sh*t, Sherlock"?

I mean, would you wash cars for £5 a go?

It is not even £5 in some towns as you get a complementary Magic Tree air freshener. ::) You can understand why Eastern Europeans are attracted from Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine, where if you can get a job as they have high unemployment and get paid as pay will be intermittent it will on average only be around £50 a month, why anything earnt here and sent home will seem good money. :(

So when it is fully regulated the prices will go up to £20 a car to pay the council licencing fees and nobody will use the service. The council then have to use council tax to cover the 10 loss making council officials who are each on £50k a year. :(

Don't be silly, they didn't have airfix kits then. It would have been the First world war.

I paid the local eastern european chaps at the imo car wash £30 to clean SWMBO's skoda inside and out.

Arguably expensive, but given that its spotless inside and out and they removed enough dog hair to knit a whole new dog, I think it was ok value.

Ive just had my car washed for £5, it did only take 10 mins, but divide that £5 up between the 5 guys doing the cleaning after paying expenses (leccy bill must be quite high as they have a washing machine/tumble dryer for their cloths and they also heat up 1/2 of a 40gallon oil drum for warm water to wash the soap suds over the cars)

They don't need to make a profit or even enough money to pay the staff. However that doesn't mean that they don't make profit and lots of it too. A lot of these types of businesses are money laundering fronts for drugs or other dodgy dealings.

After all, how does the government/coucil etc know if they cleaned 1 or 100 cars today? The fact that they are cleaning the money means the business has a significant throughput of money and pays taxes, albeit limited by using multiple sites and clever accountants.

Last time I paid proper money, it was £50 for a full valet. Came to my house with his own water and electric. He proceeded to wet clean all the seats and carpets and spent ages gettting the oil out of the boot carpet  ::). Washed and waxed the outside, the full works. I was very impressed.
