M1 minibus crash
« on: 28 August 2017, 14:23:56 »

One of the two arrested truck drivers has appeared in court this morning. Seems strange to me that he lives and works in the UK, but needed an interpreter for the hearing.  Was he using the no speak English excuse or was our legal speak not very understandable to him? What a waste of eight lives.

Tough to say. Perhaps due to the gravity of the charges the crown opted for the interpreter to ensure there was no question about due process later on in a trial.

On a side note, I was surprised that the alcohol limit on HGV drivers was the same as car drivers. I would have thought they'd be subject to lowere limits, in the same way pilots are :-\. Given the complexity and potential risks that their vehicles pose.

English isn't a requirement for working within the EU. Equally Romanian or Polish aren't required for working in either country.

(All these refugees trying to enter the UK are missing a trick by refusing to register where they land... get an Italian passport and then they don't have to fill in so much as a landing card when they arrive here :-X)

Suspect the ALM truck (driver of this has been found guilty of DBDD and DUI) had followed the exit slip and veered back onto the carriage way and straight into the side of the minibus.  The Fed Ex driver was clearly tailgating the bus as he failed to swerve around it... he clearly tried as the impact on his cab was predominantly nearside, but no other reason to charge him with DBDD :-\

Obviously a tragedy though :'( And clearly a lesson to anyone thinking that sitting at 50 mph in the nearside lane is a good idea...

Having served on a jury where the accused had a grasp of the English language an interpreter was provided to make sure he understood all the legal implications of the due process of law..

No.  He's been charged and remanded into custody.  ;)

Yep. The court would have insisted on an interpreter in order to avoid the possibility of non comprehension being used in defence at a later stage.

Stand corrected. Both were arrested/detained at the scene, so today must have been the formal charge then.

Dreadful but I am not suprised that HGVs are involved and found wanting.  For some reason that stretch is notorious for bad driving by HGVs and I have long suspected that some of the Eastern European drivers are driving while over the limit.

An example which was filmed northbound M1 not far from where the incident took place:

Most of them quite rightly lampooning the drivers, but worryingly some are sympathetic to the driver arrested for being over the limit! :o :o

Car only reacted after the truck was mostly past...

Not brilliant, but equally, had the car driver been watching their mirrors, which is a sensible thing to be doing when queuing to leave a motorway, then they could have preempted the positioning of the lorry as it approached, thereby limiting the impact of the lorry drivers bullish action... ie moving to the left to avoid a conflict...

It could be suggested that the car driver is half asleep and pissed off because the lorry has prevented them from their intended course of carving a second lane where there is only one...

Two wrongs don't make a right, and let he who is without sin etc, spring to mind :-X
