Omega General Help / Another breakdown
« on: 30 October 2015, 17:08:22 »
Took the car in for its MoT recently – it needed wishbones, headlight polish and a replacement sidelight.  I asked the garage to do the work and also to replace a noisy wheel bearing.

On picking the car up, the battery was flat.  I asked why this was but just got a shrug, “don’t worry about it” and a jump start.  (Done incorrectly, of course.)

About three miles down the road, feeling cross because the wheel bearing was as bad as ever, the battery light comes on and the engine starts to clatter.  I stop instantly to find that the aux belt has shredded and the tensioner has seized and disintegrated.  No big deal except that parts of the belt have become sucked into the timing and shoved it out by a notch or two, hence the clatter.

In short, goodbye engine – since I can’t be horsed to re-valve both heads, even assuming the pistons are OK.

My question to you more learned folk is does the garage bear any share of the responsibility?  Clearly the seized tensioner is not their fault but they did return the car to me with an obvious problem that wasn’t present when I took it in.  And, when the flat battery symptom was pointed out to them, they didn’t bother to check for the obvious causes.  Is this a lack of competence or is it just the kind of sloppiness that is OK these days?

Omega General Help / HBV and crank sensor?
« on: 08 July 2015, 10:57:25 »
Hi Gentlefolk

Noticed the telltale red dribble down the bell housing a week ago and made mental note to replace the HBV.

Then, yesterday, engine cuts out dead and won't restart, then starts and runs perfectly a few minutes later.  A few hours later, the same story.  Sounds like crank sensor beginning to go, although I can't check anything as the wife is hogging the Omega today.

Fair enough, HBV and crank sensor will be replaced - at least the scuttle only has to come off once for both.  But is it coincidence or have you ever heard of coolant from the HBV causing the CS to become burgered?  I guess it could get in at either the top connector or the sensor itself.

Just musing...

General Car Chat / AllGermanParts service
« on: 11 June 2014, 23:28:06 »
When the rattle from the drop links suddenly went from irritating to frightening, the excuses had to stop and I had to get the finger out.  The previous ones were Contitech and lasted just under 20,000 miles - not brilliant in my view.  So, based on their good reputation here on OOF, I decided to go for Febi Bilsteins from the AllGermanParts website.  Not quite as cheap as the no-name Chinese Ebay specials but a very good price for a decent brand that should last.

Unfortunately there was a glitch and the order didn't get through right away - I think it was a PayPal foul-up.  I called Jason at AllGermanParts and, even though the delay wasn't his fault, he instantly upgraded standard delivery to overnight courier free of charge and I had the parts in my hands the next morning.  Now that's what I call service!

Most impressed - I'll definitely be using AllGermanParts again.

Thanks Jason!

General Car Chat / Don’t buy an Avensis
« on: 28 December 2011, 21:30:37 »
... not that I thought you would!

Had a minor fender bender last month – no escape route so I was forced to watch a dozy Ford Ka driver pile into my back bumper.  The insurance company loan car was initially a Toyota Avensis 1800 estate with 5K on the clock.

Although it is styled in homage to a house brick, there is nothing remotely solid about it; everything feels as loose as the morning after a dodgy phal.  The front wheels tramp horribly in first and second and the front end lets go at every possible opportunity.  Combined with brakes that snatch, I would say the car is lethal.

There is plenty else I could mention but little things that stick in my mind are the bright green idiot light that urges you to change up a gear every time you go over 1500rpm and the figital handbrake switch cunningly hidden at arms length and out of sight somewhere under the steering wheel.  On the plus side, the engine is pretty gutsy for an 1800, and it returned over 35mpg in moderate town driving.

Just as I was getting used to its all-round uselessness the air bag light stuck on, which I took as an excuse to get a replacement.  This turned out to be an Insignia 1800 SRI with 6K on the clock.  Oh joy!  It has suspension, steering, reasonable road holding (for a WWD) and brakes that work properly.  OK, somebody has let a limp wristed designer loose on pointless curves that compromise functionality, but only on unimportant things like switch positioning and rear visibility.  ;)

So would I recommend this car?  Errm... no.  Although it feels nicely planted, there is roughness at most revs and the engine is totally gutless, especially lacking in grunt at normal overtaking speeds.  Drop from 6th to 3rd before an overtake and you need to set an alarm clock before pulling out.

Just to cap it all, it averaged 31mpg which, considering it was mostly motorway use, is worse than my 2.6.

... or perhaps I should say worse than my 2.6 was before its thermostat stuck open   :'(

General Discussion Area / £1,500 for driving 30 miles anybody?
« on: 17 November 2011, 22:23:10 »
Petrol in my neck of the woods is 5p more than it is 30 miles around the M25 - it always is, has been for years.  I'm told that a fuel tanker typically carries 30,000 litres.  At 5p per litre extra following the trip, that's about £1,500 extra "for going".

I wonder if they pay this to the driver?   ::)

OK, a good chunk of it obviously goes to the government in taxes but, given that the fuel companies are fair minded and public spirited, can anybody think of any possible reason for this apparently easy money?

Omega General Help / Engine too cold
« on: 05 November 2011, 18:05:23 »
Indicated engine temperature doesn't ever make it above 80C except in traffic.  This is intermittent at present but becoming more frequent.

Am I right in thinking this must be thermostat sticking open?

If so, am I likely to cause any damage by delaying replacement until it isn't raining (April by the look of it)?  Aside from damage to my wallet caused by pisspoor mpg  :'(

General Car Chat / Tyre position
« on: 28 October 2011, 19:47:06 »
My daughter is about to buy 4 new tyres for her Pug 106.  She is on a budget so the local tyre place suggested 2 good ones on the rear and 2 cheaper ones on the front - reasoning that she would have trouble controlling a rear wheel skid.

I reckon this is barmy - if you're going down that road you want the good ones on the front, where the drive is, the weight is and most of the braking is.  But I'm only a dad, not a tyre salesman, so I know nothing.   ???

What do you reckon?

Omega General Help / Ticking crank sensor bomb?
« on: 28 October 2011, 17:52:34 »
Started the 2.6 last week after it had stood outside unused for a fortnight.  The engine cranked over freely on the starter but only fired very intermittently.  A quick check under the bonnet showed nothing obvious so I just kept on cranking.  It gradually fired more frequently, then often enough to keep going without the starter, and finally caught on all cylinders after a minute or so.  It felt like fouled plugs, which is possible as I have a mild case the usual valve stem problem.

Anyway, it has had a few dozen starts and done a few hundred miles since then and behaved perfectly, starting first time every time.  The tickover might be slightly less smooth than before but hardly noticeable.  There has been no warning light of any sort and the pedal trick gave no codes either then or now.  Shouldn't it show a few misfire codes?

Any ideas for what the problem might have been?  First signs of crank sensor failure or just a glitch?

General Car Chat / Drop links
« on: 01 October 2011, 21:56:59 »
I've had a noise like dead drop links (drop dead links?) for over a year.  (Dugga dugga dugga?)  Never got around to replacing them because WiM said they were fine, I couldn't feel any play, and I assumed it was just one of those mystery suspension noises.  Anyway, since I had my head in the wheel arches today I thought I might as well replace them anyway.

Yay - noise is gone  :y :y :y

Moral of the story - if it sounds like drop links - gentle clonking on undulating roads at lowish speeds - replace them regardless.  It's cheap and easy.

BuyPartsBy on eBay are currently selling two Contitech drop links for £12.95 delivered.  Dunno how they can do this - the postage alone is £5.67 - but it isn't a typo.  Ill let you know if they give up the ghost after 500 miles!   :)

General Car Chat / Steering geometry in the plughole of the earth
« on: 28 September 2011, 17:06:33 »
Good news for those disadvantaged folk living anywhere near Redhill or Gatwick.  Our local independent tyre boutique  - RSR Tyres & Wheels - has taken delivery of a new Hunter 3D geometry setup dohinkus, identical to the one used by WiM in Chesham.

The staff don't have quite the depth of knowledge you will find at WiM but they are good lads - competent, friendly and know how to use the kit properly.  They will default to the standard Vx configuration but were happy to substitute the camber settings I specified.

They charge just under £30 per adjustment - so £60 for front toe plus camber and another £30 if you want the rear tracking/camber compromise done too.  The guy doing mine clearly understood the interaction between the camber and toe adjustment and was patient enough to get both spot-on.  He also took time (and a lot of effort) to free off the rear track rods that have been seized ever since I have owned the car.

Free re-check and re-adjust after a fortnight - should be just enough time for me to fit a wheel bearing that hasn't been adjusted to my wife's spec.  :)

Happy daze!  :y

Omega General Help / Wheel bearing OEM
« on: 28 September 2011, 16:20:45 »
Does anybody know who is the OEM for Omega front wheel bearings?

Given that Vx charge well into 3 figures even with TC, I would be keen to source elsewhere if the quality is similar.

I can get Contitech or Febi cheap - is either any good?

TIA

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Vx Bulbs
« on: 09 June 2011, 17:26:23 »
I’ve been getting occasional brake light and side/tail light warnings for months now and been unable to find any fault.  Even replaced the bulbs with proper E marked ones from Halfrauds.  Somebody on here suggested Vx bulbs from the stealer but I dismissed this as tosh – same wattage on the same supply can’t have a different resistance.

Well I’m here to tell you it isn’t tosh at all.  I replaced my stop/tails with the genuine article from Vx at a grand outlay of £1.73 for both and haven’t had any problem for over two weeks.

Just don’t ask me why!

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Ose Audio
« on: 24 May 2011, 23:15:51 »
Here's a trivial one!

As my CCR2006 comes on, the display shows OSE AUDIO rather than BOSE AUDIO.  Does this mean somebody has been playing SBs with the config?

I don't think it is pixel trouble because the the pixels that would form the B light up OK when other things are on the display.

Doesn't affect the operation of the unit - the sound is rubbish as you would expect.   ;)

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / CDR 2006 won't eject
« on: 19 May 2011, 22:26:30 »
Someone Who Must Be Obscured has, bless her, put a non-CD in the CDR 2006 CD magazine, and it now refuses to eject.   >:(

I know something similar has been discussed recently but I think this is a little different – the other three CDs play fine so I don’t think the laser head can be involved.

Any bright ideas how I can get it out without resorting to club hammer and cold chisel and dismantling the whole head unit?
