How did Serek do it?
« on: 09 January 2018, 16:12:44 »

When Saint Serek replaced my wishbones, etc, the other week, as part of his attention to detail he checked my screenwashers - no wetness!
Ugh, I thought, I've not long cleaned the filter and cleaned the reservoir, so it should work.
Hearing this, Serek opened the feed connector halfway along the body edge, nearside, and blew down the tube section which led to the reservoir/pump.
Water issued forth from the reservoir filler cap, an d normal operation was restored.
I have two motives for sharing this: firstly, I may not be the only one who didn't know this trick and secondly, it has stopped washing the screen again.
I tried to repeat what Serek did, but after trying several different ploys, I simply could not separate that join.
How did Serek do it?  ??? :-[

Not a great solution, it just blows the crud off the filter back into the tank.....it can then block the filter again.

I sort-of guessed that, but I had given it a thorough clean and used good, constipated screenwash too, so it should not have clogged up so soon!

Those hose joints are very hard to separate in cold weather. A brief warming with a hot air blower should soften things.

Thanks Terry, I'll try that. It was cold in his workshop when Serek did it too - but then, he is incredibly strong, as I confirm every time I shake hands with him!

A kettle of hot water does the trick too.  :y

Out of interest, what screenwash have you used, as decent ones should prevent this?

I've come to the conclusion that the Triple QX shite they sell for about £2 per bottle is little more than blue tinged water, based on my recent experiences of it.

Shame, as I bought a shed load, most of which will be binned.

Yep, me too, when it was on special - I have 10 litres, hence my use of it!
You would advise that I dump it, then?

I have 20 litres of it, Ron, it seems ok to me. I certainly won’t be throwing it away.

Given that we spray it around and all over the place from our cars, screenwash must be an environmentally friendly product!  ::)

How to get rid?  ???  Box it up and send it to me and I'll dispose of it for you.  :y

All of my cars have a built in screenwash disposal unit!  :)

I use the yellow stuff (-20c maybe?) from Halfords normally, I think its now just over £3.  Normally in winter mixed 50:50, unless its looking to be proper cold like a few years back.

The Triple QX shite, despite being labelled as concentrated, I think is premixed.  No clues on label, just how to mix based on season, rather than what sort of temps each mix will give you...   ...and they seemed to be a strong ratio to me, hence just using neat.

Just mix it to 50%, still works well, in the arctic conditions we get here in Blighty.

I use Halfords Blackcurrant and mix it roughly 25% screenwash / 75% water, so I end up with about 20 ltrs of screen wash which lasts for ages.  Not had a problem yet!  :y

I must be lucky then, coz when I take the Mondeo in for a service, the garage tops up the screenwash, which lasts until the next service, no idea what they use, but it works ok  :)

Not lucky, just not making mountains out of molehills. There's nothing complicated about choosing using screenwash.

So, I take your advice, and buy a load of "whatever is available and cheap" concentrate, use it neat, and as soon as we get (just about) sub zero temps, it freezes.

And another member using the same has had his filter block again.

Clearly, screenwashes vary from quite good to utter shite.

I think in the cash of that shite I bought a load of its water with a small amount of dye in it to make it look like screenwash ;D

No cleaning agent, and clearly no antifreeze agent.  And if it allows that white slime to grow, no antibacterial agent in it either.

Have you tried the sort that is diluted 1:100? I wouldn't call something that's mixed 1:1 concentrated, whatever it says on the label.

I buy the GM Opticlean 5L on trade and dilute it a little bit more than the label suggests - get about 6 x 5L cans. Never had it freeze yet and works well.

Trouble is you use so much with headlight washers this time of year.

It was claimed to be concentrated, but think its pre mix at around 1:10000

Its shite.
