Could anyone recommend anyone or a garage near to Paisley Scotland, that can do a Timing belt on a 2002 2.6 Omega Saloon? I am going to see a 2.6 today, but I would like to get a new timing belt put on for my own piece of mind. I can get the timing belt kit, either Gates or Contitech. I don't have the confidence to change it myself. I don't want to ruin the engine by making a mistake.

Thanks in advance

The kit to fit will be around £50, so makes DIY not that expensive...

...plus you know its done right ;)

My problem is that I don't feel that confident. Need someone to watch over me, or someone who could do it and not mind me watching.

Hoping to keep this one for a long time.

Buy the "How-to" CD from the OOF shop (£5), and beg, borrow or steal the necessary locking kit.....

Do as advised above, and just make sure you rotate the engine at couple of times with a socket or spanner before firing it up. If you've got it badly wrong, the pistons will meet the valves and you will feel the resistance on the socket / spanner without doing any damage.
Then if you fire it up and it runs a bit rough, you can do it again to get the timing spot on.
I'm nervous every time I do it, and only do it to my own cars, but it really isn't that difficult with the DVD to guide you, and the correct tools.
As long as you allow yourself a day to do it , with no time pressure, you shouldn't go wrong.

I been offered some help from Grifter, to do the timing belt on my 2.6 :y. I have found a Gates kit that I think fits and has all the tensioners and bolts needed, cannot seem to find a Contitech kit.  Could someone please confirm if this is the correct one for my car, 2002 2.6 petrol saloon?

Hi.    Yes and no !.  They list it as being suitable for all the v6 engines whereas there are differences in the later ones in the backplate and the lower roller is a fixed type rather than an eccentric one. You can still use the kit but you will have to put the new top roller and tensioner onto your original backplate and you can use the bottom roller but you will need to go through the full adjustment procedure for earlier cars. (The 2.6 or mine at least ) has a non adjustable /non eccentric bore bottom roller so all the adjustment is just on the top roller .if you google some pictures you will see what i mean.

Thanks Cam.in.head for the reply. I have found a Contitech kit, but not sure if this is the correct one, it says that the adjusters and belt are in it.

Must admit I bottled out of doing mine,so I bought a kit[complete with water pump-I think that was a Fahren one as that seems to ring a bell]and paid DLK to come and fit it[about 2yrs ago now]and he left the backplate in place and just fitted the new tensioner/roller to this.

hi yes it will fit. same as the other thou in that you will need to keep your old backplate and it has the adjustable lower roller in it. when they list them as fitting all v6 models then thats when we know its rubbish!. not the item but the description.!. .still expensive though. if youre gonna do it this way theres a unipart kit on at £62.80

Hi thanks for the reply.  I rang local Vauxhall dealer, just for a laugh. They took the Reg No. then said could you wait a minute.  The phone was put on hold. When the parts person came back on, he said am I sure I wanted a full kit, when I said yes he said it was £320 including Vat. He said that was alot, but said he had one in stock.  Good job I was sitting down. :o

Don't know. The parts department up here are not much good. When I had my Jeep and tried to order parts it was a nightmare.
Could someone please tell me the correct Gates or Contitech Timing Belt Kit Parts Number, I need for my 2.6?  If possible one where it is a straight swap, without having to sort out backplates, etc.  All the ones I keep finding need some alterations doing to them.

Thank you in advance for all help.

It's straight forward swapping over pulleys on to your original backplate if you need to. Obvious when you see then in the flesh.

Thanks for the reply.  So any of the two that I put links to would work, just do the backplate swap.

I would be interested to know. I am going to be changing the cambelt on my 2.6 shortly.
I will need the GM kit 93172354 or gates kit K035453XS.
I currently have a gates kit installed so not sure if i can get away with swapping the pulleys and tensioners with the current backing plate.
From what i have read the belts are all the same (as in number of teeth) so any V6 kit should be fine.
The part i am not sure is i think my current kit has a static pulley on the lower mount but the older kits come with another tensioner to adjust the 3-4 cams.
Not sure if that would be an issue or not?

No its not an issue as i said to mr addy its just a little easier with the fixed lower pulley as you only need to adjust the upper of for alignment rather than the lower one as well. The kits seem cheaper too.and like you say the belts are ok although i seem to recall some belts only having lining up marks for one type but again thats not realy an issue as you would be using a locking kit/cam position guage anyway.

Sound good to me. I am on the hunt for a older kit then.
Swap the pulleys and tensioners with the current backing plate and we should be good to go.

I found this on the Gates Site. Which of these Kits are the best one? Swapping the pulleys if it makes life easier.

Looks like its the 3rd belt kit option if you are wanting the correct fit kit .

If you want a straight swap with the same backing plate then the kit K035453XS would be the one if your engine number is 08578512 or over. Should be a sticker on the cam covers.
That's the most expensive option from what i can tell.
I am looking at getting an older kit K015453XS or K025453XS then swapping the pulleys over with my current newer backing plate.
This should be around half the cost if the parts are interchangeable?
Thanks

As discussed before, any V6 cam belt kit will fit any GM V6. I have fitted many different makes over the years, never had one fail. My current spare kit on the shelf is an INA kit that I paid £30 for 2 years ago. The cheapest I can find on e-bay today is a Unipart kit for £62.80. The vendor admits he bought some bankrupt stock and is selling it on.

I thought that it was the tensioner pulley that failed  rather than the belt. If you are doing a cam belt change don't cut corners it could cost you a lot of money let alone the grief when the car breaks down.

Not that it matters, but I thought it was the pulley bearings that stiffened, causing the belt to come off and disaster to ensue. I have twice experienced auxiliary belt derailment, which is bad enough but does not destroy the engine.

All kits should have new tensioner, and the tensioners are all identical.

Its the backing plates and lower idler that vary
