Well, almost it still works but the handle is now cracked and wont open (its still got my Dinner in it), its a Tosh, big one, bought back in 1981, was expecting it to last a bit longer if Im honest.

Anyway whats worth buying, dont want cheap shite, but then dont want to be spending loads on one, whats good, with any new features, and hopefully will last, unlike the my one thats just broke.

Consider going for a catering model, that the professionals use?
They are made for all-day use and should last a bit longer in domestic use.

Noticed on the Web now now there are combination ones, ie Grill or Oven combined and some that will Steam, any good or just a marketing hype to charge more money.

No, not hype; they are well worth having. Mine's a Panasonic "Inverter" model and the grill isn't fantastic, but works ok and is very useful for plate-warming. The convection oven part is terrific, pre-heating to a set temperature then timing the cooking from then.
The mictowave: well, it's a microwave, and just works.
It's just a domestic model though, and not 36 years old!

Buy the cheapest you can get and dump it after two years or so for another cheapo. Kitchen "white goods" are designed to be disposable these days.

Our Microwave in the caravan lights up and turns, but it does not heat anything. Any thoughts whether it is fixable, or what is the cause !!!

Its a Tesco one and is six years old.

Almost certain to be the Magnetron, which generates the microwave energy to cook your food.
As with Lexmark printer cartridges, it will be cheaper to bin it and buy new that replace!

Its almost certainly not the magnetron.

Three key parts go, those being the High voltage capacitor, the HV rectifier diode and the HV fuse (the former two can take the fuse out).

Easy enough to check with a multimeter, had to replace the diode on a Sanyo catering one last year (it was 14 months old) and have fixed many a failed capacitor.

Interesting. Your experience is quite different from mine! I did consider the capacitor as a possibility, but I've never had one fail - only Magnetrons. The usual reason for Magnetron failure is when 'er indoors puts some large metal dish inside - they don't like it up 'em!

How strange is that Ron? Got the same one, known as the Slimline Combi, the second I have had in 18 years. Great features, and quality performance. Highly recommended!

Plus it has a Child Lock feature, cant help thinking with my Dinner inside, Child Lock and all thoses Buttons on the front of it.

Is 28 litres as opposed to 27 that important Zirk? Just cut down on your meal sizes!

Child lock doesn't lock the door, just locks out the buttons..

My favourite button is the "Chaos Defrost" button, just because of the name.

Apparently it's just a fancy defrost.. I googled - random pulses of microwaves to auto defrost (based on weight) more evenly.

Yes,that is OK as it is a Kenwood, a brand I like. But it is 'only' 25 litres and I thought you wanted 28 and lacks the chaos defrost

But if you like it for 1/2 price you cannot really go wrong with that

I hope you are joking? It's simple; press the grill button (no power options), tell it how long to grill on the timer buttons and leave it to get on with it.
Ten minutes makes plates really toasty to keep your brekkie warm, but don't bother toasting bread!

White goods are her department so I don't really need to understand it.

Ours says 'Grill 1-2-3 so is much more confusing.

One thing I do know is that if you put a casserole dish with foil on in it and select microwave, you will get the best indoor firework display ever. The downside is that your house will smell like you've had an electrical fire and you have to buy a new microwave ..... ummm .... errr ...... allegedly.

Its a bit too complicated for me, but she doesn't grumble about it.

It does do one of the best microwave baked spuds I've tasted, by using microwave and grill in unison. Obviously still not a real baked spud, but close, and only 14mins.

I have a Morphy Richards microwave/convection oven.It's about 5yrs old now and given that I don't have a cooker[haven't for about 15yrs]it has had some usage in one format or the other for most days of that 5yrs I've had it.Favourite kitchen appliance though has to be my slow cooker.

]got it in her head all those years ago that we didn't actually need one,so we got a microwave/oven[that one lasted about 10yrs]a slow cooker,an electric wok and a George Foreman grill and called it done-oh,also got a pop up toaster with an extra bit on the end that'll boil 4 eggs or poach 2 eggs at a time and a deep fat fryer[tried one of those air fryer things and couldn't get on with that]she passed away 3yrs ago but I've stuck with what there is they do me just fine.

It has a button that says baked spud, then type in weight, and wait for it to bleep 14mins later....

Got fed up Window Shopping and Scratching my head, so decided to take the Door apart and fix it.

So, some Proxy Resin, alloy sheet and some Bolts and a good clean up, still using the same Microwave,

maybe for another 30+ years. if I live that long.
