Mr Gonads comment elsewhere about a Bluefin remap has got me thinking!   

So a quick look around the tinterweb shows I can buy a new Bluefin gadget already set up for my Mondeo 2.2 TDCi for about £300!  However these Bluefin gadgets (which look a bit like a code reader for those that don't know) seem to go quite cheap on ebay.  I've just seen one go for £5.50! Another one I've seen is configured for a Renault, but the seller claims that you can download the correct software for your car from Bluefin. 

So what do I need to know?      TIA!

Bluefin is a SuperChips product, but there are some fake rip off ones about now.

Also, I thought that on connecting to your car, the bluefin "paired" itself with your VIN, making it unusable by anyone else - not sure where I read that though, probably on PH forum, so make of it what you will   

EDIT: just seen this on their website, looks like eGay ones could be a waste of £5.50, or represent a small saving depending on the unlock charge

Can I use my Bluefin on more than one vehicle at a time?
The Bluefin is designed to become tied to one vehicle and, therefore, cannot be used on two vehicles at the same time. It is, however, possible to use the Bluefin to program one vehicle with the Superchip modification, then pay for the unit to be reset, at a reduced price from the RRP of a new unit, for use on a subsequent vehicle. This would, of course, mean that it could not be used again on the original vehicle as it will be tied to the current vehicle.

I tried a Superchips Bluefin on the mighty Signum. It didn't end well because the car kept going into limp mode whichever map was used.

I sent it back for a refund.

The Bluefin will only work on one car. So you won't get a remap for £5.50.

Yes so it seems.    I always get carried away at thought of a bargain! 

So it seems that the way forward is a new Bluefin correctly configured to your car at the cost advertised.  Worth it if the car is a keeper I guess.

I'm amazed anyone would consider a remap of a diesel when the emissions rules are changing at the end of next month.

If you must do it, make sure you can revert to standard for the MOT. There is a reason there are a lot of remapped/no dpf/no egr/no cat diesels up for sale.

DG, since you're an appreciator of find old(er) automobiles, and I believe you might also be a Facebook type person - have you checked out the "classic american & custom cars & parts for sale uk" group? Lots of stuff that would float your boat, including the odd old Merc.. (I keep meaning to take a photo of the two my neighbour has, both your "ideal" vintage I believe - one drop top and one saloon)

Occasionally a very nice 67/68 Vista Cruiser or one of it's derivatives pops up for sale... Usually 7 plus litres of practical motoring and often just cheap enough to make  you wonder how much higher the dog might fetch

Older Mercedes at sensible money are few and far between in the UK, but there's still a reasonable supply of the seventies stuff in the US that whilst not necessarily pretty, is still sound enough to have potential...

There's a late 1980s vintage E class sitting in a dealer near me - £6k.. been sitting there at least a year at this point. My neighbour's two are early 80s vintage if memory serves, and the red convertible is in perfect condition (the saloon being his daily), he tows his teardrop caravan behind it and I'm pretty sure he's got an MGB in the other garage, too.

Anyway.. every now and then things pop up in that FB group that I mean to share with you and never quite get around to it

Hmm. Might be easier to get all my gliding cr@p in the boot, and I doubt I'd notice the trailer on the back (in neither handling nor fuel consumption terms).
