Dropped laptop -toast?
« on: 02 March 2018, 07:20:06 »

Dropped laptop.

Press switch on side and lights come on on the keyboard for about four seconds before fading away.

Tried the following in various combinations.

Remove battery, no mains power, hold on button for 30 seconds for reset.

Hold on button during connection to mains.

Remove hdd and reseat

Remove memory and reseat

Twice on this much repeated process of start button reset, we got a loud beep

I am now thinking that there isnt much else to try other than CMOS - the small circular battery.

Any further things to look for before i declare it toast buy another laptop and an external hdd usb carrier if data not backed up.........?

Ps first time i have ever been inside a laptop. Clever use of space. I can see why i like desktops the size of a container ship. ;D

What laptop is it?

If it's beeped, it's probably not that dead. How did it beep? Short, long? How many times? Has anything come up on the display? Have you tried an external monitor incase it's the screen.

Try reseating as many connections as possible, check ribbon connections too.

It is a lenovo yoga 500

Nothing comes up n the display. Good suggestion re trying an external display.

It only exhbited the beep on two occasions. Both were during holding power button on whilst inserting ac charging lead.

Didnt check ribbon connections so a good suggestion.

Not going to be able to do much more diagnstics till later in day as i am out.

Will check household insurance later too.

Go down the insurance route if you can.

Beyond that, if it bleeps, look up the bleep codes.  That said, if its turning off slowly, I suspect you will struggle to do much with it.
