I have just acquired an Opel 2.5 DTI with BMW engine Y25DT uplift which clearly may not have the same spec antifreeze as the normal red Vauxhall, or at least I am not sure but wouldnt it follow BMW line in antifreeze.
Anyone know if this has been posted somewhere before or alt' an answer

Bmw uses blue antifreeze, not red

That's not true. Yellow - the original long life - cant be mixed. Red usually can, but read the instructions.

Drain out what's in there, flush out, re-fill with new anti-frezzee, of your choice, using distilled water to mix to 50%>.

So buy a 10L drum of distilled water, give 5L to wife for the iron, tip 5L anti-frezzee into your 10L drum, sorted.

I did not say anything about "yellow" , or purple or green or rusty brown water
you should not go by colour as a definitive method of what anti freeze type it is 
but mixing oat (pink /red usually) with blue (silicate ) has heen well documented to form gel /cause problems

Most Pinks, including GMs Dexcool, can be mixed.  That was not the case in the late 90s when the first 5yr antifreezes came along. But always best to flush/refill to take advantage of the improved life.

the instructions for the anti freeze in the second hand car will be long gone ,

even if the seller said what type he used , can you trust his word 

I think we're both singing from the same hymn sheet 

just pointing out there's more to anti freeze chemistry  than "just top it up ,it'll be fine"

this is a great forum , i'm learning lots 

If in doubt ,flush it out ,  replace it all , to avoid a fall
