Thanks, but to reiterate, my PC will not recognise my phone and there isn't any software installed to remove.
I'm off to sit on a motorway somewhere!

As Zirk said, you need to plug in the phone and find whatever your computer has installed at as in the COntrol Panel in Device Manager.  Then uninstall that driver, unplug the phone and install the correct drivers.  Then and only then plug it in again.

Pretty much what is said here

WhenI got my "new" smart phone[actually a second hand Galaxy Y]I took the memory card from my old[non smart]phone and put it in the new one,the new phone would work but not fully and I needed a new memory card[got one free from Vodafone]to make it work right, but then I needed a SD card in order to take photos as the memory card didn't have the capacity.Could it be a similar situation in your case?Have you tried asking in a mobile phone shop as they may have the know how to sort your issues?

Now that is a good point. Next time I go to Chelmsford I'll ask the people in the "3" shop. They were very helpful ages ago when I wanted it unlocked.

Is it an android phone? If so, go to the play store and download disk digger or similar... Might help :-\

Nope - it's old with proprietary software required and a proprietary OS ;)
