It can be tricky to separate the thermostat from the pipe, it's a casting and quite cheap.

Yes it can, although I've managed to change the thermostat and o ring without disconnecting the housing from the pipe. Undo the bolt on the outside of the head, remove ribber pipe and then turn the housing and pipe over, replace thermostat and refit.

I wouldn't like to destroy new stat by trying...Did you just unclip the part that is hold into place by spring and pull it out?
That would make things much easier

Yeah, turn it over, I normally use needle nose pliers, spread the pliers so they can sit on the recessed flats, push down and turn.
